A court has struck out a suit seeking to challenge the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidacy of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The case, reportedly filed by former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, was dismissed by the court, bringing a temporary end to the legal challenge against Atiku’s emergence within the party.

According to reports, the court ruled that the suit could not proceed, effectively striking it out. However, the decision does not amount to a final judicial determination on Atiku’s eligibility beyond the issues presented in the case.

The ruling comes amid ongoing political realignments and legal disputes within the ADC as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections. Several court cases involving the party’s leadership and internal affairs are still pending before different courts.

Political observers say the judgment could influence the opposition’s preparations ahead of the next election, although further legal action remains possible if any party decides to appeal or file a fresh suit where permitted by law.

As of the time of this report, neither Atiku Abubakar nor Rotimi Amaechi has issued an official public statement responding to the court’s decision.

Do you think internal court battles weaken political parties ahead of elections, or are they a necessary part of strengthening democracy?
