Minister’s brother, monarch, 4 others killed by bandits in Niger

A traditional ruler in Niger State and brother to the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, has been killed by suspected bandits in a renewed wave of attacks in Borgu Emirate.

The victim, identified as Alhaji Ahmed Yusuf, the District Head of Galla (Magajin Garin Gallah), was reportedly killed when suspected bandits stormed his palace on Monday night, August 24, 2026.

Sources said the attackers targeted the traditional ruler following his earlier warning to suspected bandits to stay away from Galla community and stop terrorising residents. 

The warning was allegedly interpreted by the criminals as a challenge, resulting in what sources described as a retaliatory attack on the monarch.

The attackers reportedly invaded the palace and killed Alhaji Yusuf. Four other persons were also reportedly killed, while an unspecified number of residents were said to have been abducted during the attack.

The killing has further deepened anxiety across Borgu, an area that has witnessed a disturbing succession of deadly attacks and mass abductions in recent weeks.

The latest incident came only days after suspected bandits attacked communities in the Dekara District of Borgu, including Gidan Zana and Kpenya, shortly after Friday prayers on August 21.

An unspecified number of worshippers were abducted and about 30 killed, with security agencies subsequently mobilising for rescue operations.

The renewed violence also follows the recovery earlier this month of nine bodies along the Wawa-Lumma Road in Borgu, with police saying the victims were suspected to have been killed by bandits while travelling through the area. Security forces subsequently intensified clearance operations along the route.

Borgu has also remained under intense security pressure because of its proximity to the Kainji Lake area and Kainji Lake National Park, which security sources and residents have repeatedly identified as difficult terrain in the fight against armed criminal groups.

The death of Alhaji Ahmed Yusuf is therefore being viewed not merely as another casualty of the escalating insecurity but as a particularly troubling development because of the position he occupied within the traditional institution and his reported efforts to resist the infiltration of criminal elements into his community.

The deceased monarch was a retired Army Master Warrant Officer and was the brother of Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security.

He was also a cousin of Alhaji Abdullahi Iliyasu Wara, Director of Operations of the National Hydro-Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) and District Head of Lumma.

The Borgu Emirate has mourned the death of Alhaji Ahmed Yusuf, describing him as one of the notable sons of the emirate whose death represents a loss to the traditional institution and the wider community.

The latest killing is likely to intensify calls for stronger security operations in Borgu and surrounding communities, particularly as residents continue to face the twin threats of banditry and mass abductions.

As of the time of filing this report, the exact circumstances surrounding the reported deaths of the four other victims and the precise number of residents abducted had yet to be independently established.

Security authorities are expected to provide further details as investigations and operations in the affected communities continue.
