Adamawa: Agency, NEMA launch campaign against flood threats in 15 LGAs

From Yagana Ali Yola .
The Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has launched a comprehensive state-wide Sensitization and Awareness Campaign on Flood Preparedness and Response across 15 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Adamawa State.
The campaign, scheduled to run from 20th to 22nd May 2025, is designed to equip communities particularly those residing in flood prone areas with essential information and practical strategies to safeguard lives and property ahead of the peak rainfall season.
Speaking at the official flag-off ceremony held in Yola North LGA, the Executive Secretary of ADSEMA, Mr. La’ori Celine emphasized the critical role of proactive community engagement. She stated:
“The 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction indicates a high likelihood of flooding in several parts of Adamawa. Our goal is to reach the grassroots with critical knowledge and early warning messages that can save lives and reduce losses.”
She called on community leaders, traditional rulers, youth groups, and women’s associations to support the initiative and take ownership of local preparedness efforts.

Also speaking at the event, the Head of Operations, NEMA Yola Operations Office, Mr. Ladan Ayuba commended ADSEMA for the initiative and reaffirmed NEMA’s commitment to building resilient communities. He noted:
“Disaster risk reduction is a shared responsibility. NEMA will continue to support state and local actors through capacity building, early warning dissemination, and the pre-positioning of relief materials. We urge residents to heed the warnings and adopt safety measures, including timely evacuation when advised.”
In his goodwill message, the District Head of Jimeta, a respected traditional leader, commended the initiative and assured the agencies of community cooperation.
He emphasized the need for residents to take the warnings seriously and adhere to the safety guidelines provided.
The ongoing sensitization campaign is part of NEMA’s broader disaster risk reduction strategy, which emphasizes proactive measures, inter-agency collaboration, and grassroots engagement.
As climate-related hazards become more frequent, the importance of preparedness—especially among vulnerable populations such as farmers – can not be overstated.
