The Commissioner, Mefor who attended the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) July Congress in Awka, however applauded their support for the Soludo’s government.

Addressing journalists at the meeting, Mefor said his return for a second term was a call to work harder for the state and urged journalists to continue supporting Soludo’s government’s efforts.

He thanked them for the support the ministry received in his first term and for the fair reportage NUJ has given the Soludo government and announced plans for a quarterly media briefing to deepen collaboration.

“There has been remarkable improvement. As they say, truth is always beneficial. We will strengthen this relationship further.

“Every quarter, we will meet here to review the government’s progress in the last few months and get your input and perspective on how to do better,” he said.

Mefor also reiterated his open-door policy and linked media partnership to security, urging journalists to support the government’s security architecture.

“Two days ago, we met and appealed to you to help us defeat insecurity. If we lose Anambra to insecurity, even meetings like these will not be possible. Security agencies are working, but they need our help.

” If you see something, say something; call 5111. Please provide us with information, and we will take action to apprehend criminals. Let us continue to support our security architecture,” he urged.

The commissioner, who asked to be an associate member of the state NUJ Council, offered technical support for the NUJ’s planned cooperative society, promising to share documents that will help the council establish one with the state NUJ chairman.

Responding, the Anambra State NUJ Chairman, Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, thanked the Commissioner for his visit and commitment to the union and reaffirmed the union’s stance on independence.

“Four years ago, we made a conscious decision to remain independent and not be manipulated by anyone.

“We made a conscious decision to prioritise the advancement of Anambra State, and we have consistently upheld that commitment.

“There were times we were offered money to fight the government. We rejected it… Because this is a union, we stand for each other, and nobody is bigger than the union.

“For the sake of the union and our professionalism, we will continue to maintain a low profile and do what is right,” Odogwu said.
