LG polls: Controversy trails APC’s nomination of consensus candidates in Niger

By Daniel Ebi, Minna.
Controversy has continued to trail the nomination arrangement of consensus candidates adopted by the ruling All progressive congress for the forthcoming November Local Government polls.
It was gathered that the Party has stepped up action to calm down the nerves of the aggrieved members.
The Nations News Nigeria learnt that a massive protest greeted the exercise in most of the twenty five local government areas of Niger State.
It was equally gathered that the party also warned those fermenting trouble to have a rethink before the hammer falls on them.
The organizing secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State, Muka Faisal, who spoke newsmen, revealed that the governor, Umaru Bago can select a chairmanship candidate outside the nominees presented as consensus candidates from local government areas.
Addressing party members in Rijau, Faisal stated that each of the three confirmed nominees has an equal chance of becoming the flag bearer ahead of the local government election.

However, he also emphasized that Governor Bago can opt for a different candidate of his choice, effectively bypassing the consensus nominees.
He attributed the development to the fact that political parties in Niger State are racing against time to conclude their primary elections, which must be completed between March 15th and 24th, in line with the electoral timetable.
There are however indications as at the time of filing this report that some aggrieved stakeholders are threatening to work against the party in the council election slated for a yet to be fixed date in November 2025.
