Alia bans unscheduled August visitors to Benue, IDP camps amid Easter period

Governor Hyacinth Alia of  Benue State has banned unscheduled August visits to the state, particularly those likely to trigger political gatherings, as the Easter period approaches.

The governor In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, announced that he is not expecting any high-profile visitors in the State.

“The Governor wishes to inform the public that he is not expecting any August visitor to the state today.”

“The governor is currently engaged in critical meetings with state stakeholders. Therefore groups or individuals planning to visit Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps to first obtain written approval from the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA).

“All individuals or groups intending to visit IDPs in Benue State must first seek and obtain written permission,” the statement read, cautioning that unapproved visits compromise safety and security”,’ he said.

According to him,  any attempts to enter Benue without prior clearance would not be allowed, urging security agencies and the public to enforce the directive to maintain peace and order in the state. 

Unconfirmed reports have it that the presidential candidate of the Labor Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi has scheduled a visit to the state.

Obi is coming to Benue State to celebrate the forthcoming Easter celebration with internally displaced persons in the state before the visit was launched by the governor.
