Akwa Ibom Lawmaker Embarks on Free Medical Outreach for Constituents, Targets 100 Surgeries

The member representing Ibiono Ibom State constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Moses Essien has announced a four-day free medical outreach for his constituents from August 5 to August 9, 2024.

He made this known while addressing newsmen in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, on Tuesday.

Essien, who also serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on Health, stated that the outreach aims to perform over 100 general surgeries and treat various ailments.

The Nations News Nigeriareports that the exercise will take place at the health center in Ikot Uba, Ibiono Ibom local government area.

Essien revealed partnerships with several organizations, including the Hellen Keller Foundation for hydrocele surgeries, the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), and the Akwa Ibom State Agency for the Control of HIV and AIDS, among others.

He further explained that the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health has approved the medical facility to be used for the outreach.

The Lawmaker, Essien, however Called on his constituents to take advantage of this opportunity, adding that his motivation to provide free medical care as a token of appreciation for the overwhelming support he received during the elections.

“It’s my wish, having been elected by my people, to use the committee I’m chairing to impact them health-wise by embarking on a free medical outreach,”.

“The outreach will cover general surgeries, free blood pressure and sugar checks and treatments, deworming of children, malaria rapid diagnostic tests and treatments, HIV tests and counseling, eye checks and provision of eyeglasses, and free consultations.” He said.

Essien noted further the challenges faced by people in rural communities and emphasized his commitment to addressing these issues through partnerships with organizations such as the Excellence Community Education Welfare Scheme (ECEWS), the Akwa Ibom State Agency for the Control of HIV and AIDS, and the Nigerian Medical Association.

He aims to leverage his position as the Chairman of the Committee on Health to make a significant impact on his constituents.

“I know in the rural communities, a lot of people are suffering from different ailments, especially hydrocele, and the Hellen Keller Foundation has agreed to partner with me to perform surgeries for no fewer than 100 patients. We must give strength to our lives,” he concluded.
