Mogodi’s journey from a modest household in South Africa to becoming an African mining leader has not been void of both personal and professional challenges. 

Raised by a diligent mother and without the presence of his father, Mogodi’s formative years were defined by hardships that fuelled his strong drive to achieve success. 

“I saw my mother work relentlessly to support us; I realized I had to make something of myself, ” Mogodi reflects. His uncle, Ignatius Oupa Mphomane, a businessman, served as his mentor and sparked his entrepreneurial spirit.

Mogodi established MAB in 2010, navigating an industry known for its high capital demands and complexities. The mining sector offers the greatest potential while requiring tens of millions of Rands monthly, he emphasizes the financial challenges associated with growth in this field. 

The early years were fraught with obstacles, as Mogodi encountered rejection in established boardrooms where his ideas were often overlooked. Nevertheless, with determination, and a gift for mining leadership, has guided MAB through these difficulties, gradually amassing a portfolio that now includes three operational mines, launching him as an African mining leader.

Rising through the Ranks of South African Mining

The South African mining sector is a massive industry, intricately linked to the nation’s economic structure; this structure affects both mine owners and upcoming African mining leaders.

MAB has ingeniously centred their focus on opencast mining and boasts a varied portfolio that includes coal mining and chrome beneficiation. The company offers both washed and unwashed coal, customizing its products to adhere to stringent international standards. 

Its chrome operations utilize cutting-edge beneficiation facilities that can process more than 250,000 tonnes of material each month. 

We are starting to understand the mining supply chain and the shipping industry as a result of the mining business," Mogodi explains, revealing the company’s strategic approach to operational efficiency.

By the close of 2022, MAB had 489 employees, a figure that has since increased to over 500. This count excludes the substantial number of subcontractors and third-party workers who bolster the company;s extensive logistics operations.

With a fleet of 150 trucks and nearly 700 subcontractor vehicles, Mogodi has established a dependable network for transporting ore to major export terminals, mainly in Richards Bay and Durban. 

He confidently states, ‘Our logistics division is vital to our success, enabling us to transport ore efficiently from mine to market; 

Strategic Expansion and Economic Impact

MAB is poised for a bright future as it continues to pursue vertical integrations. In 2025, Mogodi launched plans for MAB Energy, a division focused on fuel supply that will expand into diesel importation and storage throughout Africa.

The company also launched MAB Connect which aims to deliver affordable internet access to underserved areas.

Our goal is to create interconnected ecosystems that power fleets, educate future generations, and position MAB as a significant industry player, he explains. With the MAB’s market valuation now at R11.3 billion.

Mogodi stresses that their mission goes beyond just making a profit. about having a purpose; uplifting communities and generating employment. MAB, steered by black ownership, aligns its mission with broader goals of economic inclusion and transformation within South Africa’s mining sector.

Despite the robust growth, Mogodi acknowledges the complexities of operating in South Africa’s regulatory landscape environment. Investor confidence is key, particularly as MAB prepares for international expansion into India. 

His perception of regulatory stability and value of our local port authorities will greatly influence our expansion strategies, he candidly remarks.

As the industry continues to evolve, Mogodi’s vision of an interconnected and inclusive mining sector serves as a roadmap for aspiring entrepreneurs navigating similar challenges.
