From Abel Zwanke, Lafia
Rival factions of the Labour Party in Nasarawa State have produced separate governorship candidates for the 2027 election, further highlighting the leadership dispute within the party.
One faction announced the emergence of one, Ibrahim Afaka Azamu as its governorship candidate following what it described as a successful and transparent primary election conducted in line with the party’s constitution and democratic principles.
In a statement issued at the weekend by one of the factions, said the primary marked a major milestone in the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections and reflected the commitment of members to building a stronger political platform in the state.

The group commended party members, aspirants, stakeholders and officials for their cooperation and discipline during the exercise, urging supporters to remain united and focused on the task ahead.
“The Labour Party in Nasarawa State is moving forward with renewed energy and determination,” the statement noted, adding that the party was preparing for a greater political future built on unity, hard work and credible representation.
Relatively, another faction of the Labour Party had as well at the weekend, conducted a separate primary election that produced, Gaza Jonathan, a serving member of the House of Representatives, as its governorship candidate.
The same faction also produced former Minister of Information and Culture, Labaran Maku, as its candidate for the Nasarawa North Senatorial District, alongside candidates for other elective positions.
The emergence of parallel governorship candidates has underscored the continuing leadership contest within the Labour Party, with both camps laying claim to the party structure in the state.

Political observers believe the situation may require further clarification by the party’s national leadership and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Despite the divisions, both factions have expressed confidence in the Labour Party’s prospects and have intensified efforts to mobilise supporters across Nasarawa State.
