UEL Honours Mbah With Doctorate, Hails ‘Disruptive’ Leadership

The University of East London (UEL), United Kingdom, has honoured the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, with an honorary Doctor of Law degree, honoris cause, celebrating his leadership, intellectual excellence, entrepreneurial achievements and contributions to public service.

Mbah, a former law student of the institution, received the prestigious honour on Thursday at the university’s Docklands Campus in London during its graduation ceremony.

The university, in its citation, traced Mbah’s journey from a law student who demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities to a lawyer, successful entrepreneur and governor, describing his career as an example of the transformative power of education.

Presenting the citation, Vice-Provost (Business) and Executive Dean, Royal Docks School of Business and Law, Prof. Fatima Ana-Diab, said Mbah had demonstrated leadership even as a student, particularly as President of the Students’ Law Society.

She recalled that under his leadership, the society was transformed into one recognised as the university’s Most Productive Society of the Year, while he also represented students on the Students’ Representative Council and School of Law Board.

According to her, Mbah further distinguished himself by winning UEL’s Mooting Competition and representing the university at the International Negotiation Competition before graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 2000.

Ana-Diab said Mbah subsequently returned to Nigeria, attended the Nigerian Law School and was called to the Nigerian Bar, before expanding his academic credentials with postgraduate studies in Maritime and Commercial Law, an MBA and further executive and postgraduate education at leading institutions.

She also highlighted his career in business, particularly the establishment of Pinnacle Oil and Gas, as well as his subsequent transition into public service, where he served as Chief of Staff and Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development in Enugu State.

“Peter Mbah’s journey from UEL law student to lawyer, entrepreneur and Governor demonstrates the possibilities that education can unlock and the responsibility that comes with using those opportunities to create change for others,” she said.

The university particularly commended Mbah’s emphasis on education, skills development, innovation, infrastructure, healthcare and community development, noting that his philosophy of education as a cornerstone of human progress resonates strongly with UEL’s values.

In his acceptance speech, Mbah said the honour reinforced his conviction in the power of education, innovation and service, declaring that he had never been interested in accepting the limitations imposed by his circumstances.

“One quality has always mattered to me: the willingness to disrupt. I have never been particularly interested in accepting the limits of my inherited circumstances,” the governor said.

He, however, stressed that ambition and imagination must be matched with purpose, adding that his own purpose had always been rooted in service to humanity.

Mbah disclosed that his administration was investing 33 per cent of the state’s budget in education, while building schools, technology hubs and creating opportunities aimed at preparing young people for an economy increasingly driven by knowledge, innovation and technology.

“Education enlarges our capacity to transform the world. I believe that deeply. What we are given must somehow enlarge the possibilities available to others,” he said.

The governor expressed profound appreciation to UEL for the honour, acknowledging the institution’s contribution to his intellectual development and the journey that eventually took him from its classrooms into law, business and public leadership.

The recognition places Mbah among distinguished personalities honoured by UEL for exceptional contributions and reflects the university’s emphasis on celebrating individuals whose careers and public impact demonstrate the possibilities created by education.
