Gov. Francis Nwifuru

As political activities ahead of the 2027 governorship election gather momentum in Ebonyi State, former House of Representatives candidate for Ohaukwu Federal Constituency, Aliuna Godwin, has challenged opposition parties and critics of Governor Francis Nwifuru to substantiate their allegations of financial recklessness, budget padding and lack of fiscal transparency against the state government.

Aliuna, in a statement issued to journalists in Abakaliki at the weekend, faulted what he described as attempts to discredit the governor through allegations that had yet to be substantiated with verifiable evidence.

He urged political actors to prioritize facts, accountability and constructive engagement in their assessment of the administration’s financial management.

The former federal legislative candidate was reacting to a statement reportedly issued by an opposition party in the state under the title, “Issues of Urgent State Importance: Gov. Francis Nwifuru’s 2026 Budget of Squandermania, Administrative Rascality and Fiscal Insensitivity.”

The statement reportedly raised concerns about the governor’s handling of public finances and the implementation of the 2026 budget.

The controversy has brought the management of public resources into sharper focus as political parties and their supporters position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.

At the centre of the debate is whether the administration’s spending priorities, budget implementation and financial disclosures adequately address the concerns of citizens.

Aliuna rejected the opposition’s characterisation of the Nwifuru administration, insisting that allegations of financial impropriety should not be treated as established facts without supporting documentation.

He challenged the critics to provide evidence of alleged budget inflation, padding or reckless expenditure rather than relying on accusations in their political communications.

He argued that the burden of substantiating such claims rests on those making them, adding that public discussions about government spending should be guided by verifiable records.

According to him, political disagreements should not become a justification for making allegations capable of undermining public confidence in elected institutions.

The former aspirant also defended Nwifuru’s approach to governance, describing the governor as prudent and conservative in the management of state resources.

However, that assessment remains Aliuna’s position, and an objective determination of the administration’s fiscal performance would require examination of budget documents, expenditure records, audit reports and other relevant financial disclosures.

He further condemned what he described as attempts to ridicule the governor and damage his public image through unverified claims.

Aliuna maintained that political criticism was legitimate in a democracy but argued that such criticism should be supported by facts and directed towards improving governance rather than merely discrediting political opponents.

Beyond the dispute over public expenditure, Aliuna pointed to infrastructure development, peacebuilding and human capital development as areas he believes should form part of any assessment of the administration.

He argued that the government’s performance should be evaluated by considering its projects, policy outcomes and the extent to which public programmes respond to the needs of residents.

His defence of the governor, however, raises a broader question about how political claims concerning government performance can be tested independently.

While infrastructure projects and development programmes are important measures of governance, their overall value also depends on project costs, completion rates, quality, public benefits and the transparency of the procurement processes involved.

On the question of fiscal transparency, Aliuna dismissed as unfair the opposition’s reported allegation that the government failed to provide adequate information on funds released to ministries, departments and agencies. He argued that such claims should be backed by specific evidence showing where the alleged discrepancies occurred.

The issue is significant because transparency in public finance goes beyond the presentation of an annual budget. It also involves the disclosure of actual expenditure, the identification of projects and contractors where required by applicable rules, the publication of implementation reports and the availability of financial records for scrutiny by relevant oversight institutions and the public.

For the opposition, scrutiny of the 2026 budget presents an opportunity to explain its concerns with supporting documents and specific examples.

For the state government and its supporters, responding with accessible financial information would help distinguish political accusations from questions that deserve further investigation.

Aliuna also warned opposition parties against what he described as blackmail and the deliberate circulation of false information about the governor.

He urged political leaders to exercise restraint in their public statements, particularly as activities surrounding the 2027 elections intensify across the state.

He maintained that no amount of criticism or political attacks would, in his view, prevent Nwifuru from seeking another term in office.

The statement reflects Aliuna’s political confidence in the governor, although the eventual electoral outcome will depend on the choices of voters and the broader political circumstances surrounding the election.

The former candidate attributed public acceptance of the administration to what he described as its achievements in infrastructure, the restoration of peace and investment in human capital development.

He argued that these areas should feature prominently in the debate over the governor’s performance rather than allowing the political conversation to be dominated by accusations.

Nevertheless, public confidence in any administration cannot be determined solely by the assertions of political supporters or opponents. Residents’ experiences, the condition of public infrastructure, access to essential services, employment opportunities, the effectiveness of development programmes and the management of public funds all provide relevant grounds for evaluating government performance.

As the 2027 election approaches, the debate also highlights the importance of distinguishing between legitimate opposition scrutiny and allegations that have not been substantiated.

Opposition parties have a democratic responsibility to question government policies and spending decisions, while public officials and their supporters have an opportunity to respond with evidence rather than counter-accusations.

For Ebonyi State, the most productive outcome of the controversy would be a transparent examination of the disputed budget and its implementation.

Making relevant financial records available, clarifying expenditure priorities and addressing specific concerns through established oversight mechanisms could strengthen public understanding of the state’s finances and reduce the likelihood of misinformation.

Aliuna urged opposition figures and other critics to adopt a more constructive approach, insisting that dialogue and evidence-based engagement would serve the interests of the state better than personal attacks.

He called on political actors to focus on issues that directly affect residents and to ensure that disagreements over governance do not undermine peaceful political participation.

Ultimately, the alleged dispute over Nwifuru’s 2026 budget illustrates how fiscal accountability is likely to remain an important issue in Ebonyi’s political debate ahead of 2027.

The Nations News reports that, while Aliuna has forcefully defended the governor against allegations of financial recklessness, the strength of that defence—and the opposition’s claims—will depend on the availability of verifiable evidence.

For voters, access to credible information about public spending, development outcomes and government accountability will be essential to making an informed assessment of the administration.
