Again Armed herders attack Benue community, kill 11, injure  7 others

Suspected armed herders  have  killed at least 11 persons, injured seven others in a fresh attack on Mbagena  community in Minchile council ward in Katsina-ala  local government area of Benue State.

The executive chairman of Katsina- Ala local government council, Justine Shaku who confirmed the killing to journalists on phone in Makurdi on Sunday, said the incident took place between 7-9pm on Saturday 9th March, 2025.

“The armed herders came in at about 7-9pm and invaded Mbagena  kindred in Minchile council ward and started killing and burning houses,”

“About 11 people were killed, 7 others sustained various degree of injures and they are receiving treatment in some hospital which I can’t disclosed to you for now.

“Am here with the house of representatives, representing this axis Solomon Wombo. We are here with the locals, trying to settle bills, making arrangements for caskets for burial. We are still here, making necessary arrangements since 1 o’clock today (Sunday). 

“We are here  holding a security meeting at the moment with the member representing Katsina-ala/Logo/ Ukum federal constituency  who has been on ground with the people since yesterday.

“The armed herders burnt down several houses  and destroyed so many foodstuffs. The attack is  unprovoked  and  the bandits have been carrying out these killings over time”, Shaku stated. 

The Benue State command police public relations officer PPRO CSP Catherine Anene could not be reached for comment as she couldn’t respond to text messages or calls as at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, the Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia has condemned the attack, describing it as cruel  and barbaric.

He said that the loss of innocent lives and the destruction of homes is a painful reminder of the challenges his administration encounters in the journey for peace and security in the state.

He said, “this measure of cruelty is extremely offensive and will not be countenanced”. 

The Governor who spoke  in a statement issued by his chief press secretary, Tersoo Kula, reassured the people of Benue State that those responsible will be forced to justice.

He stated that in response to this misfortune, the his government has already marshaled security forces to the afflicted localities, stating Further that enhanced security steps are being implemented to track the aggressors and forestall further incidents. 

“We are striving intently with local law enforcement and community leaders to ensure that our villages can reside in peace without fear of terrorism.

“To the people of Benue State, we want to encourage you that your security is our top priority. We recognize the anxiety and fear that such incidents can produce, but we are committed to strengthening peace and security in our communities.

“Collectively, we will rise above this challenge and strengthen our willpower to protect our homes and loved ones.

“We appeal to everybody to remain wary and report any doubtful activities to the authorities. It is only through our concerted efforts that we can achieve longstanding peace”.

The Governor extends his prayers for the lives of the deceased and calls upon all residents to stand banded together against brutality and insecurity.

Similarly, the President General, Mdzough u Tiv World Wide, and Chairman of the Three Socio Cultural Organizations in Benue State Chief Iorbee Ihagh, equally condemned the unwarranted attacks  by the suspected herdsmen militia.

President General while commending governor Alia for his effort towards bringing lasting solutions/peace in affected communities also appealed that more security forces should be deployed to the affected areas to prevent future occurrence.

The President General extend his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and lrayed God to repose their souls.
