The Niger State Government has officially discontinued graduation ceremonies in all private schools across the state, directing school proprietors to replace them with Speech and Prize-Giving Ceremonies as the approved platform for celebrating pupils and students.

The directive, which takes immediate effect, was announced by the Niger State Private Schools Board and communicated through the Ministry of Information and Orientation as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen educational standards,

promote discipline and reduce the financial burden associated with elaborate school celebrations.

According to the government, the new policy does not prohibit schools from recognising the achievements of their learners.

Rather, it requires schools to celebrate academic excellence, leadership, exemplary conduct and other outstanding accomplishments through Speech and Prize-Giving Ceremonies.

Explaining the rationale behind the policy, the government noted that graduation ceremonies in many private schools have, over the years, become increasingly extravagant and commercialised, placing unnecessary financial pressure on parents and guardians while shifting attention away from the core educational purpose of end-of-session activities.

The policy also seeks to promote uniformity in school celebrations across the state, strengthen the regulation of private educational institutions and encourage a culture that values academic achievement, discipline and character development above elaborate social events.

Under the directive, schools will continue to award certificates, prizes and other forms of recognition during Speech and Prize-Giving Ceremonies, ensuring that outstanding pupils and students receive appropriate honour without the excesses associated with graduation ceremonies.

The government stated that the directive is binding on all proprietors of private schools, school administrators, management teams, parents, guardians and other stakeholders in the private education sector.

To ensure effective implementation, the Niger State Private Schools Board will collaborate with the Ministry of Information and Orientation and other relevant stakeholders to embark on statewide public enlightenment and sensitisation campaigns.

Information Officers and Community Orientation personnel are expected to engage schools and communities to promote understanding of the policy and encourage compliance.

The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Obed Nana, reaffirmed the commitment of the Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago-led administration to improving the quality of education in the state while safeguarding the interests of learners and parents.

He stressed that the policy is intended to restore moderation, discipline and educational value to school activities in line with acceptable standards and best practices.

The policy, issued by the Directorate of Information Services of the Ministry of Information and Orientation on 13 July 2026, calls on all stakeholders to support its implementation in the interest of standardisation, discipline and educational excellence across Niger State.
