A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nasarawa State, Mathew Akwe, has described recent defectors from the party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other political platforms as “corrupt politicians and old criminals” who lack political direction and credibility.

Akwe made the remark on Thursday during the PDP State Working Committee’s tour to Doma Local Government Area as part of efforts to mobilize grassroots support and restore confidence among party members.

According to him, “Those leaving PDP for ADC and other political parties are corrupt politicians and old criminals looking for where to spend their looted money. They are more or less portfolio politicians without direction or focus.”

He added that their departure was a blessing to the PDP in Nasarawa State, claiming that such individuals had only served to damage the image of the party.

“Their exit is for the good of our party. They were the ones destroying the PDP and giving it a bad name. With them gone, we are now more ready than ever to reclaim power in 2027,” Akwe said.

He expressed full support for the gubernatorial ambition of David Ombugadu, describing him as a trusted leader.

“In Doma, we have endorsed Ombugadu because he has proven himself. We believe in him,” he said, calling on all tribes across the state to unite and support a leader with the people’s interest at heart.

He particularly appealed to the Eggon nation to promote their son and ensure victory for the party in the 2027 governorship election.

Akwe also urged the newly constituted party leadership to engage stakeholders and critical actors in the state to sustain momentum and build broad-based support.

“You are lucky to have been voted into power at a time when other parties are facing crisis and hunger is everywhere. Please reach out to those who matter and continue to engage the grassroots,” he added.

Akwe commended the State PDP Chairman, Adamu Ninga, for his resilience in holding the party together and called on him to remain focused in the push for victory in 2027.

Earlier in his remarks, Ninga said the visit to Doma was aimed at reassuring members of the party’s strength and unity. He noted that the national leadership had directed state chapters to reconnect with founding fathers of the party.

“We are here to tell our people that PDP is intact. We are returning to the foundation and reaching out to founding fathers to move the party forward,” he said.

Ninga hailed Hon. Mathew Akwe as a man of peace and a key figure in the history of the PDP, adding, “He is one of our founding fathers and a leader we must continue to learn from.”

As part of the tour, the committee also paid a courtesy visit to the palace of the Andoma of Doma, HRH Alhaji Ahmadu Aliyu Oga Onawo, where they sought royal blessings for their mission to rebuild the party and reclaim power in the state.
