Niger: N-HYPPADEC Ends Over Two Decades of Water Scarcity in Bina Community

Residents of Bina Community in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State have heaved a sigh of relief as the National Hydro-electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) completed and provided a solar-powered borehole, bringing an end to more than two decades of acute water scarcity in the area.

Speaking in an interview, the Village Head of Bina, Alhaji Mohammed Umar, expressed profound appreciation to the Federal Government

through the Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, for fulfilling the long-awaited dream of providing the community with clean and potable drinking water.

The traditional ruler thanked Almighty God for granting the Commission’s leadership the wisdom, foresight, and determination to see the project through despite initial setbacks that threatened its execution more than two years ago. 

He also commended the management of N-HYPPADEC for remaining committed to improving the living conditions of people in hydro-electric power-producing communities.

While celebrating the milestone, Alhaji Mohammed Umar appealed to the Commission to fulfil its promise of installing solar-powered street lights across the community to enhance security of lives and property. 

He further requested the construction of additional classroom blocks to accommodate the growing number of pupils in the village.

The royal father assured the Commission that the community would take full ownership of the water facility by ensuring its protection, proper maintenance, and sustainability for the benefit of present and future generations after its official handover.

He also commended and prayed for Comrade Yakubu Mustapha Bina, a prominent son of the community, whose efforts in facilitating the intervention through the leadership of N-HYPPADEC made the project a reality.

For more than twenty years, residents of Bina Community endured severe hardship due to the absence of potable drinking water, a challenge attributed to years of neglect by successive administrations. 

The commissioning of the solar-powered borehole marks a significant turning point in the community’s development and is expected to improve public health, sanitation, and the overall quality of life of its residents.
