By Cyprian Ebele, Onitsha
Tension is mounting following the arrest and subsequent detention of Agaba masquerade by the Anambra state Police Command over alleged assault on innocent people and destruction of properties at Awgbu, Orumba North Local Government area.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Tochukwu Ikenga, (SP), “The Anambra Police Command wishes to inform members of the public, especially Ndi Anambra and other concerned persons.
“That the Command has taken into custody the masquerade involved in the unprovoked and violent attacks on innocent citizens, which led to a breach of public peace in Awgbu, Orumba North Local Government Area.
“The Command notes that the behaviour of the masquerade, as seen in the viral video currently in circulation, is totally unacceptable, unlawful, and will not be tolerated under any guise.

“The suspect is currently in Police custody, and investigations are ongoing to ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.
Meanwhile there has been fear that the arrest is an abomination against the spirit world, to arrest a masquerade believed to be spirit.
According to a traditionalist who pleaded anonymity, “the masquerade should be released immediately to avoid the wrath of the gods against whoever may be involved in the arrest and subsequent detention.
“Again, the masquerade should not be taken to court because the physical and spiritual have no connection,” he warned.
