From: Ajiya Ayuba,Bauchi
The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Bauchi State chapter, comrade Dauda Shuaibu on Tuesday said that they will have total shut down after one week without any good response.
Shuaibu made this known while interacting with the members of the press during the peace protest rally that took place in Bauchi.
” You can recalled that on 29th of may, 2023 president Ahmed Bola Tinubu during his inaugural speech he announced the removal of fuel subsidy that makes everything to go higher while workers fall victims”
He said that” before bag of rice sold at 20,000, petrol 165 the salary was 30,000 and now that the bag of rice is 70,000 maize 60,000 also salary remain the same, it’s on this that NLC plan to go for nation wide strike in order the hardship to end for the better of the masses”
” It is important to note, that the atmosphere in the country is highly charged, citizens are groaning under intense hardship and pressure, many could not afford to feed their families more than once a day. We feel that, it is not justifiable to continue to go in this direction without searching for immediate solution, democracy is all about the people”
” The needs and plight of citizens must be attended to, once they voiced out, it is the only way to ensure the sustenance of the system and uphold the tenets of our democracy”
“The N30,000 National Minimum Wage is now ridiculous, as it could not purchase half a bag of Maize or Rice talk-less of other necessities of life or family needs.”
The NLC chairman, Shuaibu further said that the Bauchi State government once set a committee on palliative and voted about N80m for civil servants in the state since September 2023, but that money have not been given.
He noted that it’s the policy of the federal mortgage bank that workers will be deducted 2.5 out of their salaries, adding that the salary is always being deducted by the state government but didn’t remit to the mortgage bank which is not good.
