Senator Ned Nwoko Canvasses Igbo Unity, Calls for creation of new state in S-East

From Leo Zwànke, Lafia
The senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Ned Nwoko, has called for greater unity among the Igbo people as a pivotal step toward addressing the socio-political and economic challenges facing the region.
Speaking at the 2024 OTU Oka-Iwu Week with the theme “Strengthening Igbo Unity: The Quest for the Creation of a New State in the South-East,” the senator emphasized the importance of a unified front in achieving collective goals.
The week-long event, which brought together political leaders, traditional rulers, and cultural stakeholders, provided a platform to deliberate on the developmental needs of the Igbo community. In a statement released by his media consultant, Mike Ogah, and made available to journalists on Saturday, Senator Nwoko highlighted the urgency of regional cohesion.
“The unity of the Igbo people is not just desirable but imperative. It is the foundation upon which we can build a stronger, more prosperous future for our communities,” Nwoko said.
He argued that unity would enhance the region’s capacity to tackle developmental challenges and secure fair representation within Nigeria’s federal structure.
Addressing the theme of the event, the senator advocated for the creation of a new state in the South-East to address the imbalance in resource allocation and representation. He described the current political configuration as insufficient in meeting the unique needs of the Igbo people.
“To achieve equitable resource distribution and foster sustainable development, the creation of an additional state in the South-East is a necessity,” Nwoko stated.
Focusing on his constituency, Nwoko reiterated his demand for the creation of Anioma State to represent the people of Delta North.
He explained that such a state would provide a platform for political inclusion and socio-economic advancement.
“The creation of Anioma State is not merely a political ambition but a quest for justice and equity,” he remarked.
“Anioma deserves a voice that can better articulate its aspirations, aligning with the broader Igbo quest for balanced representation and sustainable progress.”
He further urged Igbo stakeholders to unite behind this cause, emphasizing that collective advocacy and cultural unity were crucial to achieving their shared goals.
The senator’s speech received widespread applause, with participants commending his vision and commitment. Many described his good address as a rallying call for Igbo sons and daughters to work toward regional equity and development.
The Nations News Nigeria reports that the event attendees pledged to support efforts toward the creation of Anioma State and the broader pursuit of justice and inclusion for the Igbo people.
Senator Nwoko’s contributions underscored his role as a leading advocate for regional progress and a more inclusive Nigeria.
