The Concerned Northern Christian Women Forum (CNCWF) Niger State Chapter has expressed strong opposition to the same faith ticket proposed for the upcoming gubernatorial election, emphasizing its potential to alienate adherents of other faiths

In a statement read by the Chairperson, Mrs. Grace Zegi, in Minna on Sunday, criticized the reaffirmation of a Muslim-Muslim governorship ticket by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, labeling it a move that prioritizes political convenience over inclusivity. 

“This decision disregards the sentiments of a significant portion of the population and undermines the state’s religious diversity,” she stated.

The CNCWF called on the Governor to heed the appeals of various groups advocating for a balanced representation in his administration.

 While acknowledging that the Nigerian Constitution does not explicitly prohibit such arrangements, they urged political leaders to be sensitive to the religious dynamics within the state.

 “Our socio-economic and security challenges necessitate a leadership that fosters unity and reassures all segments of the population of their representation in government,” Mrs. Zegi added.

The forum highlighted that an inclusive ticket for the 2027 general election would send a stronger message of unity. 

“Our strength lies in our diversity, and leadership should reflect this. It is crucial for the highest political offices in Niger State to represent the religious composition of our population,” she said.

Addressing the implications of the current political arrangement, Mrs. Zegi questioned the consistency of the administration’s commitment to inclusion.

 “When it comes time for elections, we are called upon to mobilize votes, yet we are sidelined during appointments. We stand for equity and fairness in governance,” she asserted.

The CNCWF reiterated its support for Governor Bago’s first term and his bid for re-election, but emphasized the need for equal representation of the two major religions in government appointments. 

They expressed hope that the Governor will honor his pledge to ensure that all aspects of society are represented in his administration.

“As we monitor the situation, we anticipate that His Excellency will act justly, as history will judge his legacy,” concluded Mrs. Zegi.

The statement was also co-signed by Secretary Mrs. Florence Dada, reaffirming the forum’s commitment to advocating for fair representation in Niger State governance.
