The National Hydro Electric Power Producing Development Areas Commission (N-HYPPADEC), on Wednesday donated relief materials, including food items and non food materials to the Benue State Government for onward distribution to victims of the recent herdsmen attack in Yelewata,  Guma LGA of the State. 

The donation was presented to the Deputy Governor, Barr. Sam Ode at premises of the State Emergency Management Agency(SEMA) headquarters in Makurdi, the State capital.

The acting Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, Haruna Jimoh-Gabi, while presenting the items expressed sympathy to the victims and stressed the need for people to be security cautious in order to prevent future attacks and other disasters.

He called on  Nigerians to adopt an intelligence gathering system to stop the rising insecurity across the nation.

“People should help the security agents on intelligence gathering to be able to avert re occurrence of attacks in their communities because the issue of security should not be left in the hands of security men alone.

“We should be more sensitive to our environment and should always help our security men with intelligence gathering to avert future occurrence.

“Despite the Agency’s financial constraints, we have  been able to get some relief materials for victims of attacks in the state.

“The items we brought includes;195 pieces of mattresses, 195 bags of rice, 130 battle of palm oil, 65 cartons of bathing soap, 65 packs of treated mosquito net, 65 cartons of washing detergent, 10 numbers of hero hunter machine, 156 piece of rubber mats and 65 cartoons of maggi”, the acting MD stated.

He however appealed to the state government to ensure proper distribution of the relief materials.

In his remark, Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia expressed his administration’s willingness to partner with the National Hydro Electric Power Producing Areas in planning and forecasting forestall disaster in the state.

Governor Alia who was represented by his deputy, Sam Ode noted the support of the agency in their contributions to economic growth of the state and promised that the government would also collaborate with the agency on disaster management.

“Hypadec has been contributing to the economy of Benue State and also lifting people out of poverty, it has risen to the occasion to alleviate the suffering in the areas that were affected.

“In the future, we will work with you so that we can plan on the issue of disaster management, we should not only be responding when it occurs, we can act in anticipation of some of these things and address them before they happen.

 “As time goes on, we will collaborate and engage with you to carry out our forecasting so that our community will not continue to be ravaged by natural and non natural consequences”, Alia maintained.

He thanked the acting managing director for his prompt response to the humanitarian crises in the state, saying that the recent herdsmen attack on Yelewata community in Guma LGA of the State had led to the death of many people and displaced several others.
