Ebonyi: ‘Blame Tinubu for the continued economic hardship, hunger, sufferings in Nigeria’ – NLC insist
The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ebonyi State chapter on Tuesday protested the continued sufferings and economic hardship of Nigerians under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The members of the union took to the streets of Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi State, and protested against the acute hunger, economic hardship and sufferings of Nigerians, especially in Ebonyi state, where cost of living is still high.
The protesters carried placards with various inscription; ‘Tinubu end poverty in Nigeria now, we say no to High cost of living, we say no to hunger, Nigerians are dying of harsh policy, Tinubu end hunger now in Nigeria etc.
The chairman of NLC, Prof. Ogugua Egwu who spoke to newsmen shortly after the protest, emphasized the importance of fair treatment of Nigerian workers, and called on the government to prioritize the welfare of its citizens.
“We cannot continue to tolerate the exploitation and mistreatment of workers and Nigerian citizens in our country. It is time for the government to listen to our demands and take action to improve the living conditions of workers across Nigeria” he stated
The association further expressed regret over the high cost of food and other items in the market, which according to him, has resulted to suffering and hardship of the citizens of the country.
The NLC members however, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the matter, and should address the welfare of Nigerian citizens to avert causing further pains to the people.
Prof. Egwu also urged the President to return the fuel prices to the original levels, citing the hardship that the recent increase in fuel prices has caused ordinary Nigerians.
He demanded for an increase in workers’ salaries, to help alleviate the economic challenges facing the country.
The chairman, Egwu revealed that the protest was done to demonstrate against the economic challenges, rising inflation, and the high cost of living in Nigeria, which according to him, workers are the most affected.
