….creation of 13 LGAs in Ebonyi State
By Uchenna Okeh, Abakaliki
The federal lawmaker, Chinedu Ogah representing Ikwo/ Ezza South federal constituency has insisted that there should be creation of additional two states in the South East, to end the perceived age-long marginalization of the region.
He also advocated for the creation of additional thirteen local government areas in Ebonyi state, to enable the state rank with other states that have above thirty LGAs in the country.
Ogah who is a member of the Constitutional Review Committee and the Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Public Hearing, made this known while speaking with newsmen in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi State.
According to him: “we all know that the South East region is being marginalized. Each political zones have 6 states while some have 7 states.
“it is a constitutional right for the South East region to have an additional two states to make it equal with other regions.
“For me as a person, i advocate for the creation of additional two states to make it seven like other regions in the country.
“This is because, we have the landmarks. we have the economic power. we have the manpower and we have what it takes to have an additional two states.
“The National Assembly members from the Southeast extraction agreed on one particular point? Either one state or two?
“They proposed one, in this part of Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra is one state, that is Adada state. While Imo and Abia proposed for one state, making it two. And that is one of the submissions both Senate and House of Representatives in the Southeast made.
“Definitely, it will yield a fruit because it is our constitutional mandate. We are doing what we are elected to do.
“And it has passed the first reading, second reading and to the public hearing. After that, we do the complying of the committee and present the report before the National Assembly. And it will pass the third reading.
“So, when it is passed to the third reading, it will be concurred by the Senate and transmitted to the president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu for assent.
On the issue of local government area creation, Ogah said: “In Ebonyi State here, we are talking on how to create additional 13 local government areas to make it 26 LGAs as a whole.
“In my constituency, we are looking at creating additional three local governments. In Izzi, we are looking at creating additional three. In Abakaliki, additional two.
In Ebonyi, additional one. In Ohaukwu, additional one. In Ishielu, additional one.
In Ohaozara, additional one. Making it 13. So, that is the proposal we have. The House of Assembly have done their referendum and presented, and it has passed first and second reading, which is the bill I sponsored.
“And when we are able to have more local governments in Ebonyi,, it will bring more dividends of democracy and more employments to the people of the state.
“So many people will have work and some other things. Electoral reform, judiciary, security and so many other acts that have been amended in the constitution” he stressed.
