IGP speaks on political killings of over 30 persons in Osun ahead of election

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Tuesday confirmed that over 30 persons have been killed in politically motivated attacks in Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
Speaking through the Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Iniedu, the IGP warned political actors against instigating violence, saying anyone found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted.
The Nations News reports that the killings have heightened political tension in the state, with Governor Ademola Adeleke and opposition figures trading accusations over those allegedly responsible for the attacks.
“The Commissioner of Police in Osun State has been given marching orders to arrest anyone or any group involved in these killings. We will not tolerate it moving forward,” Iniedu said.
He disclosed that some suspects had been arrested and charged to court but declined further comments, saying it would be prejudicial to discuss matters already before the courts.
According to him, investigations have so far recorded over 30 politically motivated killings linked to the build-up to the governorship poll.

The police spokesman said the IGP recently met with traditional rulers, government officials and civil society organisations in Osogbo to address the security situation and assured stakeholders that those behind the violence would face justice.
“We have over 30 incidents of politically motivated killings, and they are being investigated, while some cases have already been charged to court,” he said.
Iniedu said the police could not rule out the involvement of politicians in the attacks, adding that investigations were ongoing.
He also cautioned parents against allowing their children to be recruited as political thugs as campaigns intensify.
With less than six weeks to the election, the police said additional security personnel had been deployed across the state to maintain law and order.
According to him, the deployment includes operatives of the Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Special Intervention Squad and Intelligence Response Team.

He added that drone and helicopter surveillance had been intensified, particularly in border communities, while intelligence-sharing with other security agencies had been strengthened.
“I want to assure the people of Osun State that the measures put in place by the IGP will protect lives and property and ensure a peaceful election,” Iniedu said.
