Borgu: 29 people confirmed dead in boat mishap, 50 rescued alive, others missing

Another boat mishap has occurred in Niger State along River Niger in Borgu local government Area of Niger State that has so far claimed 29 lives even as search and rescue continues.
The Director General of Niger State Emergency Management Agency NSEMA, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba Ara disclosed this in a terse statement on Wednesday evening as he said his agency is racing against time in his rescue efforts.

He disclosed that NSEMA has received a report of a boat mishap incident at a community called Gausawa in Malale area/ward of Borgu LGA.
According him, “Our desk officer who lead the search and rescue operations since Tuesday night and is still ongoing “
The Agency boss explained that the boat took off from a community called Tugun sule in Shagunu ward with 90 people on board which includes women and children on the boat heading to dugga for a condolence visit.

Alhaji Ara said the incident happened yesterday at about 11:30am and the cause was attributed to overloading and collision with a tree stump.
As at the time of filing this report 29 dead bodies have been recovered, with 50 persons rescued alive while 2 people are still missing.
Search and rescue operations are still ongoing for possible recovery of missing persons.
