The legal luminary, Ukweni made this known while speaking with newsmen in Calabar to mark the 25 years of Democracy in the country,.

He stated that the value of our currency is abysmally downward because of bad economic policies of our leaders

Ukweni, SAN, maintained that until the leaders see the need of producing for export to attract more foreign exchange, the country will continue to wallow in poverty.

He said with abundant resources and vast land space coupled with the population that the country is blessed, the country consumes and borrow more than what they produced, which makes it practically impossible for the country to grow economically

He said labour today is fighting for increase in wages to assuage hardship, but if you ask me, I would suggest that they should rather fight for economic stability by pushing for the system to be productive, we are only consuming” he stated.

The legal luminary maintained that as long as there is no production in the country, the economy can never be strong and our naira will continue to be weak, no matter how much is given to workers as salaries

He said in the 70s and the 80s before the devaluation of naira, Nigeria had one of the strongest economy because it was a production economy and naira was used in international market to trade like in our neighboring countries in west Africa, and naira was ahead of some foreign currencies

The former Chairman of NBA Calabar branch linked all the woes faced by the country to our leaders past and present who don’t have the interest of the country at heart, but put their personal interest and that of their families first to the detriment of the country
