The Adamawa State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced that it is on “full‑gear” to field candidates for the upcoming local government elections, which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has slated for May 2026.

Speaking at the party’s state headquarters, the ADC’s state chairman, shehu yohanna outlined a timetable, a democratic primary process and a confidence that the ADC will “sweep” the polls.

The ADC leader contrasted his party’s approach with that of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which he said “only selects” its candidates without a genuine primary. “Our process is highly democratic,” he asserted.

“If two or three aspirants emerge in a local government, we call them together and seek consensus. We avoid the kind of exclusion that sometimes happens in primaries, but we are also prepared to go to a vote if consensus cannot be reached.”

He added that the party’s constitution requires a primary whenever there is more than one interested candidate, but that the leadership prefers consensus to preserve party unity.

He pointed to the ADC’s 15‑year history in the state and said the party now enjoys “mass support at the grassroots.” “Everybody knows what is happening in this country – the security challenges, the economic crisis – and the people are looking for a fresh alternative. The ADC has the masses with us, and by God’s grace we will win.”

The ADC leader also praised Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for maintaining peace in Adamawa, describing the state as “one of the most peaceful in the country.”

He urged citizens to remain calm and to “love one another” as the election approaches, warning that “some people create crises only to grab power.”

He concluded with a rallying cry: “We are going to sweep the 2026 local government elections. With God’s grace, the ADC will emerge victorious next year.”

Adamawa State will hold its local government elections in May 2026, following INEC’s national schedule. The ADC, which has been active in the state for over a decade, says it is preparing a full slate of candidates across all 16 local government areas.

The party’s internal deadline for the conclusion of primaries is the first day of the election month, a timeline that party officials say they are comfortably meeting.

The upcoming polls are being watched closely, as they will be the first major electoral test for the ADC in Adamawa since the party’s formation and could set the tone for its ambitions in future statewide contests.
