Unknown gunmen have in the early hours of Tuesday, allegedly set Oba community civic centre and police station both in Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra State, ablaze, and killed a police corporal in the process.
The Police Command Public Relations Officer in Anambra , SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident disclosing that the police-led Joint Security Force comprising the Army, Navy, Civil defence and other security agencies patrol the area in search of the gunmen.
“The suspected armed secessionist group started shooting sporadically in an attempt to gain entrance to the police station and threw petrol bombs at the security facility.
“They set some of the offices on fire including the Oba Civic Center. Unfortunately, a police corporal who was fatally wounded paid the supreme price,” he said.
He noted that the fire was put off with the help of other police officers on duty and the Joint Security responding team.
Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Nnaghe Itam, condemned the act, describing the invasion of security facilities as hostility toward security agents.
He further described the attack as an attack on the soul of a nation and vowed to bring those behind the unholy act to book in no distant time.
