Mayhem in Calabar, as police officer allegedly opens fire, kills 4 persons

Panic  erupted at Atakpa  near the popular Calabar Watt Market in Calabar South local government area of Cross River State, following  sporadic shooting by an armed police officer which lead to the dead of four innocent passersby.

The Nations News Nigeria gathered that the policeman whose name is yet to be ascertained at the time of filing this report allegedly fired  several shots and the bullets hit  the victims to dead.

“The innocent victims were passersby who did not have any quarrel with the police officer. I suspect the officer ran amog.”. A source stated.

The shooting caused panic among residents and traders in the busy commercial area. 

This led to the police barricading the road, for fear of reprisal attack by families and friends of the victims whose identities were yet to be known.

Another eyewitness  Mrs. Theresa Etim  described the scene as terrifying, as residents of the area and business men and women flee the area to different directions shortly after the gunfire.

 The motive behind the shooting remains unclear as at the time of filing this report.

When contacted for reaction, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO (Cross River State Police Command) SP Irene ugbo said, “it’s true, we are at the scene of the incident.

“The officer  misbehaved we suspect he has become mentally unstable.This is  what we suspect at a moment. ” She maintained.

Ugbo stated that the command was still trying to unravel the mystery behind the shooting of the innocent victims.
