The Senate Deputy Chief Whip, Member of ECOWAS Parliament and Senator representing the good people of Ebonyi North Senatorial district Sen. Onyekachi Nwebonyi has charged the Ministry of Power not to contemplate an increase in electricity tariff at the moment where Nigerians are witnessing economic hardship.

Nwebonyi made the assertion on Wednesday in support of the motion moved by Senator Aminu Abbas ( PDP, Adamawa Central) during the Senate Plenary, and stressed the need to retain electricity subsidy in the country for the foreseeable future.

Recall that the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu had recently in a Press conference in Abuja disclosed that Nigeria is not likely to retain the current electricity subsidy.

Senator Nwebonyi while supporting the motion moved by Abbas, argued that it is inconceivable to contemplate an increase in electricity tariffs, taken cognizance the excruciating economic hardship being faced by Nigerians at the moment.

The lawmaker called for an urgent overhaul of the system to avert suffocating Nigerians under the yoke of estimated bills and ameliorate the sufferings of the masses.

According to him:“ In view of what Nigerians are passing through economically today, we should not be talking of hike in electricity tariff. I want to use this medium to appeal to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria to keep to their promise of giving all Nigerians prepaid metres. They should stop this idea of estimated bills, they are doing it to Nigerians and I see it as intimidation” he stated.
