The cross river state Governor, prince Bassey Edet Otu has lagged off 20th Carnival Calabar dry run, Africa’s biggest street party, which has clocked 20 years of thrilling performances and cultural excellence.

The Calabar carnival marks 20 years of uninterrupted street party, with  this year’s theme, “Traces of Time,” having been introduced in 2005 by the administration of former Governor Donald Duke into the state tourism and cultural  event.

This year’s dry run  was flagged off in Calabar with dignitaries, cultural enthusiasts, and media partners all in attendance as the state Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu and his wife, Rev. (Mrs.) Eyoanwan Otu, leading in the opening ceremony that also featured an emotional reconciliation service — a moment the governor described as “divine and symbolic.”

Speaking at the event, Governor Otu expressed joy over the coincidence of the carnival’s 20th anniversary and the spirit of unity demonstrated during the reconciliation ceremony.

In his words; “I feel very excited. God knew why He made sure that there was reconciliation and unification today, and that it coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Calabar Carnival,”.  “This year’s edition will be one of the best. I welcome everyone to Calabar to enjoy the party.” he stated.

The governor further explained that the theme “Traces of Time” was chosen to reflect the evolution and enduring legacy of the carnival over the years.

According to him; “This theme is unique because it captures our very existence. From day one, all the themes have built up to this moment. It is a watershed year, and all the bands will creatively interpret it in their own spectacular ways,” he added.

On her part, the First Lady, Rev. (Mrs.) Otu, described the reconciliation event as a divine occurrence that perfectly aligned with the theme.

“Reconciliation is key. As a mother, I believe the best thing to do is to promote peace and unity, which are paramount to God and man,” she stated.

The Governor also used the occasion to invite the world to Calabar for the December festival, which will feature processions, music, dance, and displays of cultural heritage.
