FUTH  Lafia’s CMD reveals FG’s plan to encourage Research among institutions in Nigeria

The Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lafia (FUTH Lafia) has organised a retreat in conjunction with Innovative Biotech, Abuja and Centre for Advanced Medical Research and Training  (CAMRET) of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University,  Sokoto for vaccine research and development. 

Speaking at the two-day inaugural Vaccine Research Retreat held at Julius Nyerere Crescent, Asokoro, Abuja, for FUTH staff, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of FUTH Lafia, Ikrama Hassan, said the collaboration is part of the Federal Government’s broader agenda to encourage collaboration in research among specialists led institutions.

Ikrama disclosed that the partnership with Innovative Biotech, led by world-renowned vaccinologist Professor Simon Agwale, is set to transform Lafia into a major hub for medical research, particularly in vaccine development and disease surveillance relevant to the region.

Ikrama also appreciated the Governor of Nasarawa State, Engineer Abdullahi Sule, for his unwavering passion and commitment toward ensuring the centre becomes a reality.

He further expressed gratitude to the Deputy Governor, Emmanuel Akabe, for not only initiating the centre during his time as Commissioner for Health but also for his continued support. The CMD equally commended the efforts of the current Commissioner for Health, Gaza Gwamna, for his active involvement and dedication in driving the vision forward.

Also speaking, the Director of Innovative Biotech, Professor Simon Agwale, commended FUTH Lafia for its commitment to research and innovation. 

He noted that the partnership would significantly contribute to the advancement of medical research in the country, particularly in the development of home-grown vaccines and medical solutions tailored to Nigeria’s health challenges.

The event was attended by  stakeholders from the world of vaccine research and development in Nigeria.
