From Abel Zwànke, Lafia
The former deputy governor of Nasarawa State and current Director General of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Silas Ali Agara, has cautioned Nigerians against excessive spending and restoring to borrowing.
He, however called on Nigerians to use the celebration of Christmas season as a time of love, reflection, and rededication to the service of the nation.
Agara made this known on Wednesday during an interview with journalists, after the Christmas service at ECWA Good News Church Akwanga, Nasarawa state.
According to him: “Today, we join Christians worldwide to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It’s a season of love, a season of rededicating ourselves to the service of our nation.
“We must reflect on whatever we have done that is not right and commit to doing better,” Agara said.
He emphasized the need for compassion and support for vulnerable groups in society, including internally displaced persons and those in need.
“This is a season where we should remember loved ones and channel our energies and resources to those who are physically weak or displaced. We must reach out and show love,” he added.
Agara also commended the efforts of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies, acknowledging their sacrifices in ensuring peace and security across the country.
“We should appreciate our military men and women and other security agencies who work tirelessly to protect us and ensure internal security. Above all, we must pray for the well-being of Nigerians and for wisdom and good health for our leaders, including the president, vice president, and cabinet members,” he stated.
In his remarks, Agara praised the Nasarawa State Governor Engr. Abdullahi Sule and his cabinet for fostering a peaceful environment that allowed residents to celebrate Christmas in safety and comfort.
“Without the peace and security provided by these men, we would not be celebrating Christmas in the comfort we find ourselves in. We should continue to pray for the leadership at all levels so that God blesses them with good health and wisdom to guide this great nation,” he said.
Agara further urged Nigerians to celebrate Christmas within their means, cautioning against excessive spending or resorting to borrowing for the sake of one day’s festivities.
“Christmas is not a period to live beyond our means. It’s a time to appreciate what we have and celebrate responsibly. Let us avoid unnecessary financial burdens that could spill into the new year,” he advised.
While acknowledging the economic challenges faced by Nigerians, Agara expressed optimism about the country’s future, stating that ongoing government policies would yield positive outcomes in time.
“The economy is growing, and we must appreciate where we are. The policies initiated by this government will, in time, bear good dividends for all Nigerians,” he concluded.
