‘Democracy not measured by elections but by functional social amenities — Jonathan
By Matthew Denis, Abuja
Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Foundation Executive Director Ann Iyonu has said that democracy should be judged by results, not just elections.
She made this known at the National Convening and Report Launch on strengthening the link between democracy and economic growth in Abuja.

The Executive Director highlighted that True test of democracy doesn’t stop at elections but schools that function, clinics and hospitals that work for the people, structures that last, and institutions that deliver.
According to her, Nigeria’s challenge is not lack of laws or agencies but solely enforcement strategies put in place by the government.
She said ” Democracy thrives when institutions uphold rules, procurement is transparent, audits lead to action, and reforms survive political turnover.
On the way forward, Iyonu suggested Digitalize procurement, strengthen audits, reward transparency, and tie reforms to service delivery.

Also speaking, Matthew Ayibakuro, Governance Advisor to FCDO, said democracy is achieved only when leaders pursue a public-centric agenda, prioritizing basic infrastructure and human capital empowerment for real democratic dividends.
The event’s highlight was the unveiling of a report by the former President Goodluck Jonathan, with ex-Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi among attendees.
