Benue varsity to honor Ex-gov, Suswam, others, graduates 17925

Benue State University on Thursday said it will honour some prominent Nigerians; the former governor of the state, Gabriel Suswam, Toyin Falola, Sylvanus Ghasarah, Paul Edeh and late Lt. Colonel Joseph Akaahan with doctorate awards.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Tor Joe Iorapuu , disclosed this, while briefing newsmen on the activities marking the 22nd, 23rd and 24th Combined Convocation Ceremonies of the Benue State University Makurdi.

He said that both Wanteregh Paul Iyorpuu Unongo and Lt. Colonel Joseph Akaahan  are to be conferred with 

Posthumous of Doctor of Letters, D.Litt)  Honoris Causa and Doctor of Law, D.LL) Honoris Causa respectively, in the graduation ceremony that will hold on Saturday, 7th, December 2024.

Iorapuu, noted further that at the event, the University will be conferring a total of 17,925 degrees and diplomas on graduands of the University, out of which 44  are First Class graduates in Bachelors’ degrees and diplomas.

The Vice Chancellor further said that 15,101 graduates bagged Bachelor’s Degrees, with 72 Postgraduate Diplomas, 2,196 Master’s Degrees and 556 PhD Degrees.

Iorapuu maintained that prizes will be awarded to deserving students during the convocation as the event would be the last combined convocation the university will be having ), especially during the administration of the current Visitor to the University, governor, Hyacinth Alia. 

He noted that the school will be Commissioning the Food Lab and the Centre for Food Technology and Innovation Centre (CEFTIC), while the Convocation Lecture will hold  Friday 6th December 2024, with the Lecture to be delivered by one of Nigeria’s most prolific and finest scholars of history,Toyin Falola. 

The vice chancellor, also enumerated the challenges facing the university to includes; disruption of academic calendar, volatile market uncertainties leading to the high cost of diesel and other running costs, especially with the increase of energy tariff.

Also, the continuous agitations of staff over welfare issues, finding alternative sources of income for the University, accessing grants in a competitive environment, aligning employees around the vision, strategy, and values of the University.

He as well, applauded the governor, Alia for keeping faith with the University, “the University has been the training ground for the governor’s pet project “Benue Tech Skills” where 10000 Benue Youth are trained to acquire computer skills.
