ASUU Strike cripples academic activities in Unical, UNICROSSS

From Ene Asuquo,Calabar.
The nationwide strike action declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has crippled academic activities at the University of Calabar (Unical) and the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) operating in Cross River State.
The strike is in response to the federal government’s failure to meet ASUU’s demands, including implementation of past agreements, payment of withheld salaries, and improved funding for public universities.
The union has directed its members to suspend all academic activities, including classes and conferences, and to put public lectures on hold.
The strike is expected to last for two weeks, and the union has warned its members to remain steadfast and resolute.
At Unical and UNICROSS, students and staff were seen discussing the strike, and some lecturers expressed their support for the action.
Ubi averred that it was normal for the branches of the union to meet after a declaration has been made by the national body to formally announce to its members the directive from the national, even though it would not change the decision of the national.
“We are going to formally inform our members during our congress today where they will take directives from the chairpersons of the branches,” Ubi maintained.
The ASUU chairmen for both universities have urged their members to follow the national directive and participate in the strike.
