Uchenna Okeh, Abakaliki
The deputy speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Mr. Chinedu Onah has urged federal and state governments in Nigeria to increase the salaries of civil servants, as a way to cushion the effects of hardship and sufferings in the country.
Onah who made this known while speaking with newsmen shortly after an event in Ohaukwu LGA, Ebonyi State capital, said that civil servants deserved to be treated fairly like the politicans.
He said that the current salary status of civil servants in the country, is not enough to meet up with the economic challenges, especially with the hike in the prices of food items, increase in school fees etc.
“The federal and state governments should understand the nature of things in this country, and the workers should be treated fairly. Let them enjoy the way that politicans are enjoying.
“The salaries of civil servants should be increased. No one that is paid #30,000 or #40,000 and such person pays #100,000 for the school fees of the children, and you think, that things are good for such person. And if he/she have two or four children in the school, you see that such person will be battling with hunger.
“I’m among those that are advocating for civil servants to be paid very well, so that they will be able to solve their problems. Things are difficult in Nigeria, and if you go outside Ebonyi, you will understand that things are difficult. You will know that we are in the paradise in Ebonyi.
Onah who is representing Ohaukwu south constituency, however commended the governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru for the various incentives provided for the workers in the state to cushion the effects of subsidy removal in the country.
