A chieftain of the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and former House of Representatives candidate for Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency, Hon. Aliuna Godwin has criticized Ezza-born politicians seeking to challenge Governor Francis Nwifuru in the 2027 governorship election, describing them as “jokers, content creators and daydreamers.”

Aliuna who made this known while speaking with newsmen in Abakaliki capital of Ebonyi State, insisted that the incumbent governor deserves a second term in office.

He said those from the Ezza extraction aspiring to occupy the Ebonyi Government House in 2027 should reconsider their ambitions, arguing that the governorship position should remain with Nwifuru until the completion of his deserved and constitutionally permitted two terms.

The former candidate, who contested under the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA), maintained that the re-election of Nwifuru in 2027 was necessary to sustain the state’s established power-sharing arrangement and preserve the principle of equity among its constituent political blocs.

He argued that, in his view, credible Ezza political leaders and stakeholders should support Nwifuru’s second-term ambition rather than engage in what he described as premature political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Aliuna further claimed that stakeholders, leaders, elites and citizens of Ezza extraction had reached an understanding that an Ezza candidate should not challenge Nwifuru in 2027, but should instead prepare to pursue the governorship in 2031.

He maintained that the arrangement would allow the incumbent governor to complete eight years in office before power potentially shifts to the Ezza clan, adding that political aspirants should prioritise collective interests over individual ambitions.

According to him, those already making preparations to contest the governorship on the platforms of opposition parties should reconsider their plans and redirect their political structures towards mobilising support for Nwifuru’s re-election.

Aliuna said the 2027 election should not be treated as an opportunity for political divisions within Ebonyi State, but as a period for consolidating the existing political arrangement and allowing the incumbent administration to complete its tenure.

He urged political actors from Ezza extraction to draw lessons from the state’s political history, referencing former governors Sam Egwu, Martin Elechi and David Umahi as leaders whose administrations formed part of Ebonyi’s evolving political succession arrangements.

The former DLA candidate argued that allowing Nwifuru to complete two terms would demonstrate a commitment to fairness and political understanding among the state’s different blocs, particularly those with expectations of producing a future governor.

He anchored his position on the zoning arrangement he said was established by Ebonyi’s founding political leaders following the creation of the state in 1996 by the military administration of the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha.

Aliuna maintained that adherence to the arrangement was important for sustaining political stability and preventing avoidable disagreements among communities seeking a greater share of political leadership.

He also called on political leaders, community stakeholders and supporters of the various political parties to engage in consultations and mobilise their followers towards what he described as a collective political objective ahead of the 2027 polls.

The former House of Representatives candidate insisted that Nwifuru’s second-term ambition should take precedence over the immediate governorship aspirations of politicians from Ezza extraction, arguing that the 2031 election would provide a future opportunity for the clan to pursue the state’s highest political office.

However, his position comes amid the broader political discussions surrounding the 2027 governorship election, with the question of zoning and the timing of a possible power shift expected to remain subjects of debate among political stakeholders in Ebonyi State.

Aliuna reiterated that, in his assessment, the completion of Nwifuru’s eight-year tenure would uphold equity, justice and fairness, urging those nursing governorship ambitions ahead of 2027 to reconsider their positions and support the incumbent’s re-election bid.
