Protest: Police engage critical stakeholders, caution against lawlessness in Adamawa

The Commissioner of Police, Adamawa State Command, CP Dankombo Morris, has few days to the nationwide ‘hunger and end bad governance’ protest scheduled to hold 1st August, 2024 cautioned against lawlessness in the State.

Morris, engaged with Traditional Leaders, Religious Leaders, Youth Leaders, Student Unions Leaders, NLC, TUC, PCRC Executives, leaders of Eminent persons forum, IPMAN, Gamzaki traders, NURTW and other critical stakeholders, in light of the Planned nationwide protests.

The engagement which took place at the command’s headquarters in the state, focused on the safety and security of the state and concerns over potential disruptions by faceless individuals calling for violent protests.

The Commissioner of Police, while acknowledging the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly and protest, emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order.

He urged all stakeholders to remain law-abiding and reconsider their participation in the protests.

In their separate responses, the stakeholders affirmed their commitment to peace and distanced themselves from the planned protests, noting the motives of some miscreant groups calling for violent demonstrations.

The Command calls on all groups planning peaceful demonstrations to provide details of the intended protest locations and also to submit to the police following information:

He said the proposed routes and assembly points, Expected duration of the protest, Names and contact details of leaders and Measures to prevent hijacking by criminal elements, including key identifiers for possible isolation of potential troublemakers

“This will enable the Command to provide adequate security during and after the protest, design specific measures to avoid conflict, establish clear communication with protest leaders, and minimize the risks of violence and other criminal acts.

The Command warns against any clandestine groups attempting to disrupt the peace within the state, “Any acts of destruction or looting of public or private infrastructure and businesses will not be tolerated.

“We urge all protesters to work closely with the police and other security agencies, follow the law, and adhere to international standards for peaceful assembly to ensure their rights are exercised safely and successfully” he stated.
