SEMA boss, Anam debunks alleged diversion of over 200 trailers of  Food Shipment in Cross River

    By Ene Ene, Calabar

The Director General of Cross River State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, James Anam on Monday, debunked the alleged diversion of over 200 trailers of food shipment meant for the citizens of the state.

Anam made the disclosure while  briefing journalists in Calabar, maintaining that it is not true that 200 trailers of food items were dispatched to the State

He emphasized the importance of seeking the truth amidst sensational headlines. “Curiosity has its own reason for existing. In the age of information, it is essential to look beyond sensational headlines and seek the truth,” he stated.

The SEMA boss, Anam further said that the rumours have created significant public interest, with many believing it to be true, stating that the news was a fabrication designed to create a false sense of relief.

“We have about 5 million people in Cross River State, and we are positioned to cater for as many as possible, I must confess that this government is very passionate, and we have allocated food items to all local governments in the state”.

“We have accounted for all categories,
the disabled, the youth group, the women, the church, and local government staff. Unfortunately, it is a social media world, but we appeal to our people to use social media for unity and not to disunite us,” he said.

Anam during the briefing provided specific details on the food items received from the Federal Government of Nigeria’s National Strategic Reserve between April 24, 2024, and May 18, 2024.

“The actual quantities we received were 3,384 bags of garri (25kg each), 24,000 bags of rice (25kg each), and 14,040 bags of maize (50kg each), which was later swapped with the Governor’s approval for 600 bags of 100kg beans and 800 bags of 50kg garri,” he explained.

He expressed disappointment over the spread of false information, particularly concerning such a critical issue as food.“It is disheartening to witness the spread of false information, especially when it concerns something as fundamental as food security”.

“The consequences of such misinformation can be dire, as it distracts from the real issues at hand and hinders genuine efforts to address the challenges faced by communities,” he added.

He categorically renounced the allegations of diversion of 150 trailers of food items by the Office of the First Lady.

Igbo forum begs youths to shun hunger protest in Nigeria

    By Cyprian Ebele, Onitsha

A pan Igbo socio-cultural organization, Imeobi Igbo Forum, Monday, begged Nigerian youths to shun the scheduled nationwide “Endbad governance in Nigeria”, protest, stating that it has become belated since they did not carry out the protest when the last Presidential election result was rigged in favour of President Bola Tinubu.

Making the plea, the forum national chairman, Mike Ikegulu, admitted that the right to protest is a constitutional right of the citizens as enshrined in Section 40 of the Nigeria 1999 Constitution.

He lamented that, “The youths lost the right on the day they failed to protest the selection called election on the 25th February 2023. They also watched the PEPT give judgement based on technicality rather than the substance of the matter. One would have expected the youths to have protested against lack of reforms at INEC and lack of political will to Restructure the federation held together by force.

“What about the obvious corruption, nepotism and resultant squandamania flourishing at all  levels of government. The youths have been silent while the ethnic and religious bigots metamorphosed into  monsters.

Yet no Protest. PBAT never promised much during the campaign and clearly nothing specific to embark on.

“What was clear was that he said that he would continue from where Buhari stopped. In all honesty, he’s doing just that. He’s never held a live press briefing to avoid interrogation and we present as if nothing moves us. Surrounded himself with mouth pieces and attack dogs and we’ve all been silent.

“The youths should have trouped out en masse in the build up to the election when there was doubt over PBAT name, origin, age, parentage, certificates and involvement in drugs. But the youths were caught in the web of ethnicity and religion. The foreign religions taught us that God makes the king. And the colonial security agencies are there to protect the rulers against the ruled.

“We should now bend our necks, since we’ve remained dumb and commatous in the build up to the present situation. Every country has the government it deserves”, he stated.

  • ‘North is now the largest Killing field, biggest cemetery in Nigeria – Ex-Reps speaker, Dogara

‘North is now the largest Killing field, biggest cemetery in Nigeria – Ex-Reps speaker, Dogara

    By: Ajiya Ayuba, Bauchi

The former speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara at the weekend said that the North region has become the largest killing field and the biggest cemetery in Nigeria.

Dogara, who is also the Jhendhm of Zaar land, Jarman Tikau and the former member representing Bogoro,Dass and Tafawa-Balewa Federal constituency, said that “The more human blood is shed, the more we bring the North under a curse. That unless we repent and the curse is lifted our collective labour and our resources will continue to lay in waste.

The former speaker Yakubu Dogara said this during his speech with the Titled: The role of youth leadership in Warehousing the youth burge in the north for development and progress, at the Zaar Youth Development Association, Abuja Branch fundraising, held at the national arts and culture Center behind Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Center.

Yakubu Dogara who was represented by Ayuba Baba, the Waziri of Bogoro, said that youth leaders across ethnic and religious lines must learn to build networks, if they must be of any help in  efforts to combat insecurity in the North.

“We have a model in Zaar land that is working. Talking about the peace committee between the Zaar and the Fulanis in Tafawa Balewa/Bogoro LGAs of Bauchi State which has ensured that for more than a decade now, no crisis has erupted in this area that was a national flash point and a seat of bedlam.

“By networking with others, youth leaders from our community can share the success story of this alliance with their counterparts thereby enabling others to replicate it across communities in the North”

“I call on you to build networks across peoples of all faiths and be deliberate about working together- Christians and Muslims, women and men, the youths and the old; in accommodating and defending the interest of each other until we build the North and Nigeria of our dreams.

“Anyone who tells you that we can remain divided and still build a civilization is either a fool himself or is taking you for a fool as he will have no historical parallel to point to. Let’s go back to how we were brought up so that it may be well with us”

“The problem with the North is more than unbridled violence. It is more than bandits and terrorists and the ungoverned spaces they occupy. I content that there is something in the North we have refused to see that the bandits and terrorists are harnessing”

“We love to preach about the Pharaohs but always forget to add that since God has not changed, if we repeat what the pharaohs did, we will see what they saw. I pity those that think the solutions to our problems lie with President Tinubu’s policies. What we are suffering from has been the culmination of so many evils that we have perpetrated and tolerated for years”

“Therefore, except we uproot and eliminate violence from the North, no matter how sound President Tinubu’s policies are, they will amount to no more than cultural heroine which may keep a critical mass of our people addicted so long as the effect lasts but such policies cannot heal what ails the North”

“The North cannot continue running a therapy session for pyromaniacs and hope that our region will experience prosperity and development. We cannot lose the battle against violence and still keep our civilization. Since the State controls the coercive apparatus, our collective demand to Governments at all levels must be to free the North of all forms of violence. If we achieve this, we have found the solution to our most urgent problems”

“If we know how important this fight is, we will prevail on the Federal Government and State Governments to deploy all resources accruing to the North in the fight against terror and in rooting out general insecurity from the region.

Adding that “Instead of States building flyovers in a region witnessing unremitting blood letting, the resources should be channelled to securing the region and where a State cannot achieve much, they can form zonal alliances and deploy resources in the fight against terror until victory is won”

“We all know that the North bears nearly 90% of the insecurity of the country. If estimates are anything to go by, not less than 100,000 northerners have been killed while over 3 million have been displaced in the Northeast alone.

“No one has the record of Northern lives lost to rural banditry, the farmer-herder clashes and ethno-religious conflicts. The number grows exponentially when we add to this, death occasioned by urban violence unleashed by an increasing army of mostly jobless youths suffering from substance use disorder”

In his part, the chairman of the Zaar Youth Development Association (ZAYODA) Abuja Branch, comrade Godiya Manasseh Marti expressed appreciation to the Almighty God for making the event to be reality.

He said that “We gather to support a visionary project that promises to be the game-changer in transportation in our community: the establishment of the ZAYODA Line. This endeavor represents more than just a new business idea; it symbolizes progress, opportunity, and the relentless spirit of innovation and empowerment that defines Zaar Youth Association, Abuja branch under our leadership”

“ZAYODA Abuja has pioneered the empowerment of many Zaar youths who have acquired skills in driving, tailoring, catering, decoration, and so on. With the little funds in our purse, coupled with the support of some of you seated here, we have also been supporting Zaar students in Abuja with cash tokens, and empowering the widows of our fallen comrades with Sewing Machines and Grinding machines, cash supports, and so on.

Marti appluded Yakubu Dogara and Professor Suleiman Elias Bogoro for their uncommon support for the youth and development of the Zaarland, Bauchi state and Nigeria at large.

He also expressed their appreciation to the state governor, senator Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir for executing alots of Infrastructural development in Bogoro and Tafawa-Balewa local government areas of the state.

He said that Zaar land will not forget the former governor of Gombe State, Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje, who connected Bogoro local government with electricity, when he was minister of power.

The meeting which was attended by a large section of Adamawa citizens including student unions, youth leaders, market women, people living with disability (PLWD), political and religious leaders provided a turf where critical national challenges were honestly discussed.

Various youth and women leaders who ventilated their frustrations over rising inflation, hunger and poverty thanked the federal government for initiating the process which they said will go a long way in proffering solutions to the myriads of challenges confronting the nation.

They also urged the citizens to shun protest, noting that although it is a fundamental right of all citizens, the fact that enemies of the state may hijack it to cause massive unrest made it an unattractive and unviable alternative.

They urged the government to as a matter of urgency implement reforms that will mitigate poverty, inflation and hunger in the country so that the ordinary Nigerian will enjoy the dividend of democracy and live a stress free life.

Also speaking, the representative of heads of higher institutions in Adamawa State and Provost of Federal College of Education (FCE) Yola, Dr. Mohammed Usman Degereji urged the people to preserve, adding that what the president is doing is akin to conducting a surgery on the nation.

He stressed that the process of conducting a surgery is always painful adding that the pain will only be temporary while the fruit is everlasting happiness and peace .

Degereji noted that these times calls for sober reflection and dialogue as protests will only aggravate Nigeria’s challenges similar to what happened to other countries like Libya and Sudan who live to contend with the consequences of such protest for decades.

Reacting to the submission of the various stakeholders, Prof. Tahir Mamman, Minister of education appealed to Nigerians not to partake in the nationwide protest for peaceful coexistence and more dividend of democracy in the country.

He said, President Bola Tinubu has done a lot for Nigeria within the one year of his administration and more would be achieved in the next three years.

He listed some of the achievements to include; local governments autonomy for development at the grassroots, increase in students scholarship, students loans scheme, N70,000 minimum wage.

Others are returning about four million children back to school and provision of Agricultural inputs to farmers aimed at addressing food insecurity, road projects among others.

in a separate reaction, Aliyu Wakili Boya, the member representing Fufore and Song federal constituency in the house of representatives and former deputy speaker of Adamawa State House of assembly Sunday Peters thanked the federal government for initiating the dialogue adding that it will go a long way in ushering renewed understanding between the leaders and the led.

They noted that president Bola Tinubu is working round the clock to address the myriad of challenges he met on ground adding that some of the policies need time to mature, calling for more support and understanding while urging the people to resist the temptation of protests due to its susceptibility of being hijacked.

‘Tinubu is on rescue mission, will reset economy, no need for protest- Works Minister, Umahi urges Youths

    By Uchenna Okeh, Abakaliki

The Minister for work, David Umahi at the weekend, tasked Nigerian youths to shun nationwide protest, tittled ‘end bad government/ hunger’ in Nigeria, saying that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is on a rescue mission and will soon reset the nation’s economy.

Umahi appealed to the youths and groups planning to stage a protest against the administration of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu  to show patriotism and shelve such plans for the sake of the nation.

He made this known during the flag-off of the road completion and handover ceremony of section 3 of Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Federal Highway being  handled  by BUA Group of Companies Plc  held  27th July 2024, in Kano State.

The former governor of Ebonyi state, Umahi assured the preparedness of President Tinubu’s administration to reset the economy, and that there are lots of positive indices showing that things will soon change for the good of Nigerian youths.

He said that the President is on a rescue  mission as he came at a time when the nation’s economy was on a time bomb, but has taken bold measures  to comprehensively  and holistically  tackle the root causes of the economic  problems and bring forth Nigeria to the path of prosperity in a matter of moments.

According to him: “He has put in place a lot of palliatives, including fertilizer, rice, CNG vehicles, and so on and so forth and, of course, student loans. So there will be no need for anybody to join any protest.

“Protests will not do any good to us.All the issues are being addressed. It was because  of these accumulated  challenges that God raised Mr. President  to reset the country and reset the economy. Yes, there are some hardships being experienced as a result of hard decisions.

“But those decisions needed to be taken so that our country could make  progress. Without  divine intervention by bringing Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it would have been very difficult to still exist as a country. We almost had a failed country.” He said.

The former senator, Umahi who represented Ebonyi south senatorial zone, however appealed to all to know that violent protests have done no good to any nation, but tenacity and perseverance uplift  a people.

“So let us understand that this is our country. We don’t have any other country, we have to show patriotism. Support Mr. President and in a very short time, all the full indices and benefits of all these hard decisions will begin to manifest more than what we are experiencing now.”  He stressed.

5 million youths to stage solidarity protest for Tinubu’s administration in Ebonyi, Monday

    By Uchenna Okeh, Abakaliki

No fewer than five million youths that hail from the thirteen local government areas of Ebonyi state have declared readiness to stage solidarity protests on Monday, for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, contrary to the demand by Nigerian youths to ‘end bad government/hunger’ in Nigeria.

Ebonyi Youths, especially Izzi Nnodo youths forum, among other youths have rejected the call/ demand by Nigerian youths to protest on 1st August, 2024, with the theme: ‘end bad government and hunger’ in Nigeria.

The Nations News Nigeria reports that the peaceful solidarity protest for Tinubu’s administration by Ebonyi youths, especially Izzi Nnodo youths forum, converging at the Nkwagu Ugbala ground Arena is targeted at cantering the forthcoming 1st, August nationwide hunger protest by Nigerian youths in the state.

It was gathered that the youths, especially Izzi Nnodo youths forum to embark on the solidarity protest for President Tinubu’s led administration scheduled to hold Monday, 29th July 2024, reportedly made LGA chairmen and other prominent stakeholders in the state to mobilize Youths from their various communities, to come to the capital city en mass for the solidarity protest.

Recall that the solidarity protest would have taken place last Saturday but was cancelled due to the reasons being that the governor, Francis Nwifuru, who would receive the protesters at the government house, travelled.

It was further gathered that the cancellation was also to enable the organizers and sponsors of the Tinubu’s solidarity protest to engage in adequate mobilization of youths from the 171 political wards and 13 local government areas of the state.

Investigation revealed that various non governmental organizations, NGOs, market women/ youths, support groups and human Rights organizations, etc, will be participating in the President Tinubu’s solidarity protest that will be taking place in Abakaliki, capital city of Ebonyi State, Monday.

The Nations News Nigeria gathered that the five million youths/ protesters that hail from the various communities of Ebonyi are expected to arrive at the take-off venue, Nkwagu Ugbala ground arena by 10:00am, for onward movement round the capital city of Ebonyi State.

It was equally learnt that the commissioner of police, Ebonyi State command, Ogbodo Augustina has declared the readiness/ preparedness of officers of the command to give adequate support and protection to the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s solidarity protesters, taking place on Monday, in the capital city of Ebonyi state.

In a swift reaction, the president of Izzi Nnodo youths forum, Mr. Elom Andrew Chibueze, said that the youths of Ebonyi State, especially in Izzi clan don’t want youths to protest against president Bola Ahmed Tinubu and that of governor Francis Nwifuru’s administrations in the state.

He called on Nigerian youths to be patient with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, adding that with time, all the needs/ demands of the youths in the country will be attended to by the present administrations led by President Tinubu and governor Nwifuru in the state.

Elom, who made this known while speaking with journalists at the government house Abakaliki, said: “it is our belief and stand, that there is no need for protest as scheduled to hold 1st August 2024.

“We actually know that things are difficult, not only in Nigeria but also outside the country, things are difficult. We are urging the youths to bear with the federal government, because the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is also making efforts to make things work in Nigeria” he stressed.

    By: Ajiya Ayuba, Bauchi

According to them: “It’s a truism that the inflation rate is in the double-digit and unemployment rate in Nigeria is alarming. So many graduates are out there with no means of survival”

“The economy is unfriendly and the cost of living is outrageous, out of the reach of the common man. Despite having the constitutionally guaranteed right to protest under Section 40 of the 1999 constitution of the FRN (as amended) as well as Order 2 Rule 1 of the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules, 2009”

“In line with the foregoing and given the current difficult situation in the country, and the attempt by hoodlums to hijack the protest to cause trouble and use same in destroying the country which is never our aim.

“We recognizes the importance of peace, stability and constructive dialogue in achieving our collective goal, hence the need to eschew violence and the repeat of the ENDSARS saga. Therefore, there should be a more defined manner of getting our leaders to hear our plights”

“In our view, there is no need to overheat the polity, overheat our environment and put our people, in a position where the hardship that is occasioned by economic recession all over the world is further worsened. So, we are against the protests, and we shelve our plans of a nationwide protest”

“In the course of entrenching peace, unity and development in the country at all levels, state and national, United civil society organizations is always ready to partner, create and sustain synergy with the government and other stakeholders, so that together, the dream of building an egalitarian society. where justice and the rule of law drive the process are the watch words” the group stressed.

  • Enugu CJ partners group to enhance judicial review, prisons decongestion

Enugu CJ partners group to enhance judicial review, prisons decongestion

    By, Chinelo Kodilichukwu, Enugu

The Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Raymond Ozoemena, has said that the judiciary in Enugu State gives matters of judicial review and correctional Centre decongestion top priority.

Ozoemena made this known while declaring open a One-Day High-Level Stakeholders Consultative Forum on Operationalization of Community Service Sentencing in Enugu State Justice System.

Ozoemena, who was represented by Justice C.V.C. Ezeugwu, noted further that the judiciary was giving its 100 percent support to the operationalization of community service sentencing in the state.

The Consultative Forum was organized by the Enugu State Ministry of Justice in partnership with CAPIO and Enugu State Justice Reform Team (ESJRT).

The Nations News Nigeria reports that Carmelite Prisoners’ Interest Organization (CAPIO) and Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in Enugu State have taken up a commitment to ensure the full operationalization of community service sentencing in the state.

According to Ozoemena, operationalization of community service sentencing in the state has numerous benefits to the offender, the community, the judicial, the legal and the law enforcement institutions and the government at all levels.

“I must commend CAPIO and stakeholders in the judicial system of the state for coming out with an easy and implementable operational framework for the operationalization of community service sentencing in the state.

“We are also grateful to various faith-based missions and organizations for their continuous and age-long contributions to reformation and decongestion of correctional centres within Enugu State and the country at large.”

Responding, the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kingsley Udeh, said that the forum was intended to harmonize the criminal justice system of the state as well as ensure greater deterrent and community involvement.

“The operationalization of community service sentencing in the state will definitely reduce the number of inmates in correctional centres as well as lead to better and efficient correctional centres management in the state.

“This move should be supported holistically by all stakeholders for the state to reap its maximum benefits,” Udeh, who was represented by the Director of Civil Litigation, Chief Ikechukwu Ezewukwa, said.

Speaking, the Controller of Corrections in Enugu State, Mr. Nicholas Obiakor, said that the Nigerian Corrections Service (NCoS) had started full implementation of non custodial sentencing and service for two years in the state.

Obiakor said that community sentencing service, which is one aspect of non custodian service, would be given all the necessary support for it to succeed and strive in the state in order to decongest the correctional centres.

Also, the state’s Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, lauded CAPIO for the initiative and hard work put in to finally get an operational framework for the operationalization of community service sentencing in the state.

Ekweremadu, who spoke on behalf of the implementing MDAs, said that the move would quickly reform and restore youths who find themselves on the wrong side of the law and “deter them from repeating such mistakes as they grow”.

He said: “We must be able to separate minor offenders from major offenders. For the minor offenders you give them community work that will draw them closer and correct them with love and care.

“This will ensure that our judicial system is focused on reformation and restoration rather than being punitive and vindictive as well as our correctional centres having few inmates while man-power, cost and space constraints will be reduced.”

Earlier, Justice Chris Onyia (retired), representing Enugu State Justice Reform Team (ESJRT), said that the reform of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) using community service sentencing was to ensure that minor offenders do not mix-up with hardened criminals.

Archbishop Emmanuel Chukwuma, Emeritus Archbishop of Anglican Diocese of Enugu, lauded CAPIO for the initiative while charging justice stakeholders to ensure that minor offenders with bailable charges or fines do not end up in correctional centres for any reason.

“I am calling on the Federal Government to do more in the environment, welfare and well being of correctional centres to ensure that inmates have a sense of belonging and love towards the society and be better humans,” Chukwuma said.

In a remark, Executive Director of CAPIO, Rev. Fr. Jude Isiguzo, said that the forum was meant to get all implementing MDAs, who are stakeholders, to read and brainstorm on the developed framework for the operationalization of community service sentencing.

Isiguzo said that very soon desk officers in each MDAs in-charge of offenders serving community sentencing would be trained and equipped with a framework for the operationalization of community service sentencing for further understanding.

He said that his organization over some months had involved all stakeholders in the judicial and law enforcement systems of the state on what community sentencing is all about and its enormous benefits to all, even to the minor offender.

“The need for this is in line with the commitment of His Excellency, Gov. Peter Mbah, to decongest the correctional centres in Enugu State,” he added.
