“As you have seen the level of development, If you measure comparatively the place we were in 1st October 1996 and today you will see that we have gone a long way in terms of development” he stated.
The governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir on Tuesday said that Nigeria have
shown to the world that, they are able to govern themselves and understand their differences, respect each other’s values and unite towards developing the country, despite the socio-cultural heterogeneity.
The governor made this known in a statement signed and issued to newsmen his special adviser on media and publicity, Mukhtar Gidado in Bauchi.
He said that the 64 Independence Anniversary should be used to reflect on the struggle and sacrifice of the founding fathers of this country and also strive to ensure that their labour shall not be in vain.
Adding that “It is gratifying to note that sixty four years after independence we have belied the skepticism on our ability to govern ourselves”
“Since attainment of independence in 1960, Nigeria has suffered serious setbacks in the political arena which seriously affected its political and economic growth. It is however, gladdening that today democracy has found its roots in the country. The dividends of democracy are manifest and the citizens are happy”
“We in Bauchi State have taken a multi-dimensional approach to all the developmental projects which resulted in success all round, particularly in infrastructural development.
“Having been granted another mandate by the good people of Bauchi State to run the affairs of the State for another four years, I want to assure you that we will redouble our effort and work harder to provide more dividends of democracy than we did during our first term”
“As a responsible and responsive Government, we have taken measures in collaboration with security agencies to protect the lives and property of our people by swiftly addressing any form of security challenge. The governor senator Bala seized the opportunity and commended people for their perseverance in the face of the current economic hardship that has made life unbearable.
He reassured people that the palliative measures taken by both the State and Federal Governments to mitigate the hardship through provision of food and non-food items would be sustained.
He therefore call on the good people of Bauchi State and Nigeria to exercise more patience and cooperate with the Government in its effort to bring succor to them.
“As we celebrate the 64th Anniversary of the Independence of Nigeria, my appeal to all of us is to re-dedicate ourselves to the development of our country, be patriotic and above all continue to pray for Nigerians to live in peace with one another and make our State and country great” it stated.
The Federal Character Commissioner, Uche Ukadike Ibeabuchi, representing Anambra State on Tuesday said that the polices of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is what is spearheading the progress and development being witnessed in the country.
He, therefore called for the collective support of Nigerians towards the federal government led by president Bola Tinubu to ensure greater progress and development of the Nation.
Ibeabuch made this known in a statement signed and issued to newsmen to mark the independence anniversary celebration of Nigeria at 64.
The statement reads in parts: “I join my fellow Nigerians in introspective reflection and forward-thinking aspirations, commemorating our nation’s 64th independence. Nigeria’s unwavering resilience has navigated myriad challenges since 1960.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visionary leadership and innovative policies are spearheading Nigeria’s advancement. His renewed hope agenda has yielded tangible transformation, steering Nigeria towards economic revitalization, infrastructure development, and national pride.”

“As we celebrate, let us foster patriotism and unite, support President Tinubu’s vision to strengthen democratic institutions and uphold the rule of law, ensure freedom, justice, and equity for all.
“Through collective effort, we can overcome challenges and establish Nigeria as a beacon of democracy, peace, and progress,” he maintained.
Ibeabuchi prayed God to protect and guard Nigerians and their leaders as they mark the anniversary even as he expressed optimism that in no distant time Nigeria will be better than the present administration met it.
The umbrella organization for all the Ozo title holders in Igbo land, Nzuko Ozo Ndi Igbo Nigeria (NONIN) has called for “the unification of new yam festival in all parts of Igbo land”.
The NONIN urges all the Igbo traditional rulers and community leaders to adopt one day or a period for the new yam festival across the entire Igbo land.
The call was contained in a welcome speech made by the National President of the NONIN, Professor Ike Oluka at the 2024 Ili-ji (new yam celebration) which took place on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at the Enugu Sports Club, Gulf Section, Enugu. According to Prof Oluka,
unification of the celebration of Iliji Ndi Igbo has the potential to strengthen Igbo unity and socio-cultural identity as well as reposition the Igbo nation on a bigger national and international visibility.
He reiterated the need for all hands to be on deck to make the unification of the Iliji celebration a reality and admonished that all the Igbo leaders in authority should strive to reposition the Igbo identity, authenticity and social order.
The New Yam festival is rooted in the ancient Igbo cosmology which prescribes that the Supreme Being (Chi-Ukwu) is the source of life and every other creation that compliments the world we live in. The Igbo, like the Greeks, believe that to access the Supreme Being for a particular purpose, one must pass through a specific cosmic messenger or a god in charge of such constituency.
For instance, to access God for bountiful agricultural yields, one should plead the Ahajioku. Specifically, one should invoke Njoku, the god of yam for bumper harvests; the Amadioha, the god of thunder and lightning; Ala, the earth goddess; Ikenga, for strength and valour; Agwu for health and divination, Idemili, the god of sea and river; Anyanwu for Sun; etc.
The New yam festival is the Igbo expression of gratitude to the Almighty God for sparing our lives from one farming season to the other, for bumper harvests, and also a supplication for more lives and prosperity. The use of yam to symbolize all other crops is because the Igbo regard yam as the king of all crops.
It is heartwarming that new yam festival is one of the Igbo culture that has survived the erosion of indigenous culture by the Western civilization. In other words, almost every community in Igbo land and in the Diaspora celebrates new yam every year. The NONIN is of the opinion that since the new yam celebration has come to stay amongst the Igbo, it is only necessary that a day or period be set aside for the celebration of new yam Igbo land.
In his contribution, the guest speaker at the event, Rev. Fr. Professor Nnamdi Nwankwo, the Rector Enugu State Polytechnic Iwollo, in line with the theme of the event, canvassed “for a universal celebration of ili-ji Ndigbo on a day recognized as a public holiday for the entire Igboland and the Diaspora. Prof Nwankwo argued that if the Igbo in the Diaspora can centralize the new yam in their respective countries of abode, in spite of their diverse cultural backgrounds, it is therefore very imperative for the Igbo to adopt the unification of new yam festival in Igbo land.
Prof. Nwankwo further stated that, in the Christendom, Christmas is celebrated on the same day. “My question is, why can’t New Yam Festival (Ili Ji) enjoy what Christmas has been enjoying for the past 2000 years? If the Church can do it, the Igbos can do it as well. The Nzuko Ozo Ndi Igbo can do it also”. Nwankwo asserted that “we have so much in the life of the Igboman that suggest unity but nothing can unify us better than the food that sustained our ancestors ab initio”
In his own contribution, His Royal Highness, Igwe Engr. (Dr) Michael Uzoigwe, the Chinenyeze ii of Uwani Amokwe and the Chairman of the event, explained that New Yam celebration is one festival that is common to all parts of Igbo land and that the unification of New yam celebration is one of the easiest ways to mobilize the entire Igbo land towards a consensus.
Others at the event who lent supports to the unification of new yam festival in Igbo land include, Prince Emeka Onyesoh, Oba Agbalanze of Nri and the National Leader of NONIN, Ozo Ramsy Onyia (Nnabu Odii of Ngwo), Ozo Prof. Chike Anibeze (Ijele Ezeagu), Prof. CJC Akubilo (Ozo Madukanaya), Ozo Prof. Chris Ogwugwuam Ezeagwu – the Onu-Obi of Ezi Kingdom, Delta State, Ozo Johnbosco Offorbuike (Osisioma Achi), Ozo Donatus Oguejiofor (Omenihe of Eke), Ozo Joel Eke (Ozo Okedinachi of Okpogho), Ozo Chief Emma Ugwu (Enyidiru), Barr Emeka Odenigwe (Ozo Nnanyelugo), among others.
The group resolved to take the new yam unification advocacy to the South East Governors, traditional rulers, town union presidents, Churches and other opinion molders.
The Senior Special Assistant SSA, on Peace and Security, Alhaji Ahmed Lawan has called on all parents, guardians, religious bodies to advise their Children, Wards and followers not to engage in the Proposed National Protest Organised by yet to be identified persons.
The SSA in A statement said that though Peaceful Protest is a constitutional right for Nigetians but any such action from the faceless protesters whose identity could not be ascertained should present themselves to the appropriate security agencies and to seek for protection where necessary.
Alhaji Ahmed Lawan therefore appealed to the Faceless persons proposing the Act not to delve into any action that could be hijack by hoodlums with a view to destroyed the Beautiful Projects, Programmes and Policies of the governor Fintiri’s Administration which took Dedication, Hard Work, Commitment and selflessness to build over the years and which the Entire Adamawa People coexistantly are enjoying
While counting the achievement of Fintiri administration Ahmed lawan said Adamawa State has remained ever peaceful, due to the Massive Structural Development that include Road Constructions with some of the Roads among the Most Beautiful in Nigeria, while Cottage Hospitals and other Massive Developmental strides were also recorded across the Health Sector.
The Conducive environment Created by the Executive Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri the Fresh Air governor was also also blown through the live changing policies and programmes through the annual payment of WAEC and NECO fees to Students across government secondary schools in the State in additional to Scholarships as well as Construction of New Class rooms and boosting the Educational Sector.
Governor Fintiri has not only revived the entrepreneurial sector alone, but thousands of youths, women, and the less privileged are beneficiaries of the #50,000 PAWECA Programme ongoing for many years now under the Present administration to support their businesses and engage them profitably.
“Ahmadu Umaru Fitiri is the first governor in Northern Nigeria to implement the National Minimum wage even before the template of the federal government will be available for negotiations by the Organised Labour.
The Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), Monday, rejected Federal Government resolve to site Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Skills acquisition camp at Nzu Community, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area,, Amafor Community Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area and Agbala Community in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State.
Making the rejection through her image maker, Emma Powerful, the movement said, “This smokescreen project is part of an elaborate ominous plan by the Fulani and the Nigerian Government to dispossess us of our ancestral land and heritage and it will not work. They have tried all forms of land grabbing techniques with different names such as RUGA, and these all failed.
” Now they want to import so-called displaced persons from Northern Nigeria, a distance of thousands of kilometres away from their locality and homeland into Imo State in Biafraland. These evil people never set up Skills acquisition programs for the millions of jobless youths in our land but have the evil mind to even consider bringing in Boko Haram foot soldiers into Biafraland in the name of skills acquisition for internally displaced persons.
“The Directorate of State of the Indigenous People of Biafra wants to inform the Fulani and the Nigerian government together with their stooge and murderer of our people, Hope Uzodinma, that we are aware of the real intention of this so called IDP rehabilitation centre in Imo State.
“The hatred that this man Hope Uzodinma has for our people can only be compared to what Ukpabi Asika did immediately after the war when he laid the foundation for the economic divestment of the whole of Eastern Region. This man Hope Uzodinma does not have any job creating program in Imo State set up by himself or brought in by the Nigerian government but he wants to rub it in our faces by telling us he wants to teach skills to Boko Haram in our land.
“The systematic arrangement to bring in Fulani children into Alaigbo involving the United Nations is a covert project aimed at Ndigbo, IPOB, and Biafrans in general and Biafrans will not allow such wicked infiltration acts to go on in Alaigbo. The United Nations is fully aware of the persecution, subjugation, and intimidation Ndigbo are facing in the hands of the rest of Nigeria and their government.
“The UN knows that Nigeria has not established or encouraged any infrastructural or industrial development in Alaigbo except prisons and military installations. There is no Federal Government presence in the Biafra territory so we can not allow this IDP training camp for train Fulani repented Boko Haram terrorists to stand in our territory especially the one proposed in Ehime Mbano LGA, Ohaji Egbema LGA and Owerri North in Imo State.
“The United Nations never established any project in Igbo land, but now they agree to bring an IDP camp to Imo State. We are making it precisely clear that it will not be accepted nor will it work. Ndigbo do not have internally displaced persons. Those Igbos that the Nigerian murderous Army displaced when they burnt their houses are accommodated by their relatives and neighbors in our towns and villages.
” In the entire breadth and length of Biafran Land, we don’t have homeless people to be accommodated in any IDP camp. Therefore, the Federal Government plan to export terrorists, their families, and their informants into the South East Region to infiltrate Ndigbo will be resisted.
“The dubiosity of the Nigeria Government to populate the East with terrorists and bandits is an agenda that every Igbo person must resist or we will have home-grown terrorists to deal with in the future. It is another way of settling Fulanis in our region, but it won’t work. We are ten steps ahead of this murderous Nigerian government and its agenda.
“The Directorate of State of the Indigenous People of Biafra wish to let the Nigerian government and the Imo State Governor, the hater of Ndigbo to stop this demonic IDP project at Ehime Mbano LGA, Owerri North and Ohaji Egbema LGA of Imo State because it will never stand. IPOB will never allow the Nigerian government and their stooge supreme court governor in Imo State to import terrorists and bandits in the name of displaced persons to Alaigbo.
“Those Northern displaced persons should be accommodated in the North because they have a large expanse of lands and must not be exported to Alaigbo,”: the movement warned.
The governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru has called on Nigerians to keep faith with the administration of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu as he has set mechanisms to take the country to her desired destination.
Nwifuru made the call on Sunday at the thanksgiving service held at the government House, Abakaliki as part of activities marking the 2024 Independence Anniversary.
He stated that the removal of fuel subsidy by President Tinubu-led Government is a well thought out policy which should be commended by all.
He asserted that prior to the end of the subsidy regime, marketers had held the country to ransom to a point they dictate what happens in the country even to the detriment of the vast majority.
“Many don’t know it is actually in the interest of Mr President to choose who will be importing fuel if subsidy is not removed. Mr President is the person suffering most in the fuel subsidy.
“If Mr President had allowed these marketers to continue to do what they were doing, this country would not get to this level infrastructurally.
“This decision made by Mr President is timely.”
The Governor was optimistic that the hardship occasioned by the subsidy removal is temporary
“Believe me in less than 6 months from now, fuel will be cheaper than what we have now”.
He reiterated his determination to run all inclusive governance in the state to ensure the temporary effects of subsidy removal is not felt.
” My wish is to make sure everybody is comfortable because we are equal before God Almighty”.
The Governor praised the founding fathers for their roles which culminated in the creation of the State 28 years ago and disclosed the Government’s intention to appreciate them on October 1st.
The Governor solicited the support and prayers of the people in the task of piloting the affairs of the State.
“Nobody is perfect, as Leaders we need your prayers at all times. It is better to pray for leaders to translate their visions into reality instead of gossiping them because no one is perfect” he stated.
Enugu State governor, Peter Mbah, has called on Nigerians, including political leaders across the country, to embrace unity and pursue inclusive national economic development for the common good of the nation.
Mbah made the call on Sunday during a special church service at the Government House Chapel, Enugu, to mark Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary.
The governor, who described the country’s 64th anniversary as a milestone, added that it was a testament to the resilient spirit of the people of Nigeria.
While underscoring the significant role of government in sustaining democracy, the governor stressed that the country could only thrive in an atmosphere where everyone is given a sense of inclusion, with deliberate effort to banish feelings of alienation.
“The message for us as a nation is to be united, to have inclusive economic development, and I think that is where the economy of this country is headed,” Mbah added.
He further urged Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as other leaderships across the states, in order for the country to actualise its desired economic dreams.
He expressed optimism that the country was making steady progress though in a “piecemeal” manner, which he said needed an urgent review for a paradigm shift that would address the nation’s challenges and leapfrog national development.
“We are making steady progress. We may be making piecemeal progress. Perhaps what we need to review now is whether the marginal or incremental progress we are making is enough or whether we should obviously think about ways that we can deploy disruptive innovation to leapfrog some of the developmental challenges we are faced with,” he said.
Earlier in his homily, the Diocesan Secretary/Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Very Rev Fr. Wilfred Agubuchie, charged political leaders and all those holding leadership positions both in the public and private sectors to use their positions to work for the common good of the people.
According to him, Mbah’s leadership in Enugu State has shown that Nigeria can still work for the greater common good of the people through visionary, selfless, committed and dedicated leaders.
He lauded the governor’s innovative approach to leadership in the state, saying that the tax reforms in the state were a fair measure of ensuring that the government delivers on its mandate.
While enjoining the people to support the Mbah administration, he commended the governor for the speedy completion of the International Conference Centre abandoned for years, including the remodelling of the Presidential Hotel, construction of roads across the state, provision of clean water, construction and equipment of the Smart Green Schools for the common good of the masses, and the investment in security and infrastructure.
The Senior Special Assistant to the president on Community Engagement (South East) Mrs. Chioma Nweze at the weekend, applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for addressing the developmental challenges faced by the South East region of Nigeria.
She said that the federal government led by Tinubu has launched numerous programs/ interventions targeted to promote economic growth, infrastructure development, and social welfare in the southeast region.
Nweze made this known in a statement signed and issued to newsmen to mark the independent anniversary celebration of Nigeria at 64 and creation of Ebonyi State at 28.
The statement reads in part: “With great sense of honour and privilege, I, heartily felicitate with our dear pragmatic, transformational and visionary leaders, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, on the auspicious occasion of the celebration of Nigeria at 64 and Ebonyi at 28.
“I am delighted to convey my heartfelt appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who through his renewed Hope agenda mantra is addressing the developmental challenges faced by the South East region of Nigeria, and that has been manifested in his administration’s numerous programs/ interventions targeted to promote economic growth, infrastructure development, and social welfare in the region.
“The landmark achievement so far recorded in the country, especially in the south east region is a testimony that you have come to serve the people with your wealth of experience, strength and wisdom which of course is founded on the mantra of ‘renewed Hope agenda’.
“The recent assent to the South-East Development Commission Bill (SEDC) and other valuable life touching programs, represents a significant stride towards addressing historical disparities and promoting inclusivity which would engender greater sense of belonging to the Nigerian project among the southeastern populace.
“In the same vein, I make bold to specially salute the great achiever per excellence and welfarist governor of Ebonyi state, His Excellency, Francis Nwifuru, the capacity minister of works, Father of Modern Ebonyi State and former governor of Ebonyi State David Umahi, the National Assembly Members and host of other prominent stakeholders of the SouthEast region, as we mark the independent anniversary of Nigeria at 64 and creation of Ebonyi State” she said.
The Enugu State Government has commenced the enforcement of educational policies which has led to the closure of some illegally run and low quality schools, stressing that the move will rid the state of poor-quality education and skill deficiency.
This was even as parents as well as stakeholders in the public and private academic system commended the state governor, Peter Mbah, over what they described as “critical reforms” in education that will reposition the state’s standard of learning and equip the young ones with the requisite skills to compete globally.
The Commissioner for Education, Ndubueze Mbah, disclosed, Friday in Enugu, during the enforcement exercise, that the state government would not compromise its determination to raise the bar of education in the state, which include competent and qualified teachers, adherence to the education curriculum, conducive learning environment and other safety measures for students.
He described as worrisome and unacceptable the proliferation of illegal schools across the state where unscrupulous proprietors rip off parents of resources without providing commensurate quality education for their children, adding that some schools parade unqualified teachers while cramping children in dilapidated structures which put their lives in danger.
The exercise followed an earlier directive by the ministry requiring all operators of educational institutions across the basic and secondary school levels to comply with the state regulations, which mandate registration and approval by the ministry before commencing operation.
“You will recall that we held extensive stakeholders’ engagements with practitioners, both public and private in the education sector. We sensitized our people about the state government’s educational policies and how education must align with the most advanced global practices if our children can have a chance to acquire 21st Century skills and modern workforce knowledge, to be able to compete with their global peers.
“Pursuant to the law which allows us to maintain minimum standards of education for both private and public schools, and also empowers our ministry to streamline and enhance effective administration, monitoring and supervision of private schools.
“We gave the grace of four months for all schools to register or obtain provisional licenses to do so. The four-month window period for schools to align with these directives has elapsed prompting our ministry to begin the enforcement on non-compliant schools. We are doing this to checkmate abuses and restore the dignity of education in our state,” the commissioner said.
According to him, the team has discovered several schools that had been operating under life-threatening conditions, subjecting children to unsafe and unhealthy learning environments, insisting that some of the structures housing the school children could collapse at any time.
He lamented that some of the schools visited were operating under open-roof, fallen rafters and severely cracked walls housing hundreds of pupils under an abysmal learning environment, saying they were in complete disregard of the rules guiding the establishment and management of educational institutions.
Some of the illegal schools that were shut down included Evangel School where students were crammed inside a little church with barricades, and concealed in toilets when the management saw the ministry’s enforcement team; Ivory Education Centre, located along Owerri Road, Asata, which was conducting classes in makeshift garages and amid a structure under construction; Eastview Nursery and Primary School at Railway Quarters, Njemanze, which is a dilapidated barn; St. Michael Nursery and Primary School, Asata; St. Bartholomew Nursery, Primary, and Secondary School, Asata; and Olive Grove Nursery and Primary Academy, Njemanze.
Speaking on the closures, Mbah reiterated the government’s bullish stance against substandard education, warning that operators of illegal and substandard institutions risked imprisonment under the state laws. “The safety and quality of education our children receive must be prioritized. We will not allow any school to operate below the required minimum standards. This is about the future of our state, and we owe it to our children to give them the best foundation,” he added.
The commissioner, who also reassured law-abiding schools that their compliance with the law and policy of the state will continue to be reciprocated with the right support by the government, urged the public to report any unregistered or substandard schools within their communities to help maintain the integrity of education across the state.
Meanwhile, some of the parents who spoke to newsmen lauded the government’s effort to sanitize the education sector, saying they were regaining confidence in the state’s educational system.
Arch Ezea Ugwu, who runs an architectural firm at Ogui Road, said they would not hesitate to support future steps taken by the government to reposition state education and make it the best in the country.
Speaking, Mrs Onyinye Onuigbo, whose two children were formerly in one of the schools that were closed for non-compliance, said she withdrew them in May this year after discovering that the school was only charging excessively without quality education.
She accused some of the schools planning to stage protests as a “form of corruption fighting back” because their dubious means of livelihood had been cracked.
“We will continue to support any policy like this. I heard that some dishonest proprietors who have been engaging in these criminal enterprises are calling on parents to stage protests. They should be explaining themselves in prison in a sane society. Our people must resist and shame them,” Mrs Onuigbo said.
