From Ene Ene, Calabar
The Nigerian soldiers on patrol have successfully prevented a kidnap attempt by armed youths believed to be kidnappers in Calabar South area of Cross River State.
The Nations News Nigeria gathered that unknown kidnappers attempted to abduct a Surveyor in the early hours of yesterday by using the waterways of Idim Ita community in Calabar south local government area, but they were stopped by the local vigilantes of the community, who informed soldiers on patrol in the area.
It was gathered that the soldiers responded swiftly and dislodged the kidnapers.
Despite the limited information in the report, the youth leader identified as ‘Honesty’ revealed that early on Monday at around 5 am, the vigilante group encountered some unfamiliar individuals near the Surveyor’s residence during their patrol. When they attempted to question the strangers, one of them shot at them, injuring the Assistant Youth Leader known as ‘Erico’.
“We ran back when we heard the gun shot and signaled the Nigerian Army that mounted surveillance on the vicinity. That was when I noticed that my Assistant was bleeding.
According to the youth leader, the Army acted quickly and confronted the kidnappers in a gunfight. During the confrontation, one of the kidnappers was shot, allowing their victim to escape, while the rest of the gang fled with their injured gangster through the waterways.
Ndabu Tete Eyo Okon Eyo, the Village Head of Idim Ita community, has called on the government to establish a security post in the community to address the threat of kidnapping due to the proximity of waterways that serve as an escape route for criminals.
