Adamawa: 5 dies in flood disaster, as communities mourn

A devastating flood has ravaged parts of Yola-South Local Government Area in Adamawa State, claiming five  lives and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

 The disaster, triggered by a relentless 10-hour heavy downpour, submerged homes and farmlands in Shagari and Yolde-Pate, displacing residents and causing widespread damage.

While inspecting the affected Area, Adamawa Deputy Governor, Kaletapha Farauta, led a high-level delegation to inspect the flood-affected areas and visit victims receiving treatment at Modibo Adama Teaching Hospital in Yola. 

Farauta directed that shelter be provided immediately to cushion the hardships on the victims and assured that the government would provide food, clothing, and medication to those affected.

The government has activated its disaster management agencies to respond to the crisis. Farauta noted that the level of damage cannot be quantified and that all efforts are being made to rescue those affected. The government has also promised to support the victims in rebuilding their lives.

Yusuf Nuhu, attending to the injured at the Accident and Emergency Unit, confirmed the casualty figure and stated that the victims are responding to treatment. 

However, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Head of Operations, Ladan Ayuba, highlighted challenges in rescue operations, including victims’ reluctance to be evacuated due to fear of hoodlums stealing their properties.

One of the victims, Aliyu Mustapha, recounted the traumatic experience, stating that some children are still missing after the flood, and he lost his means of livelihood. The community is grappling with the aftermath of the disaster, and many residents are struggling to come to terms with the scale of the devastation.

The Adamawa State government has assured the public of its commitment to providing support and relief to the affected communities. The government will work to provide shelter, food, and other essential services to those affected by the flood.

Rescue teams, including NEMA personnel, police, and other emergency responders, are working tirelessly to reach stranded victims and provide assistance. The government has urged residents to cooperate with rescue teams and prioritize their safety.
