555 people die in Nigeria on mob attacks – Amnesty International

By Ene Asuquo, Calabar
The Amnesty International has raised serious concern over incessant mob killings in the country, stating that over 555 people have been killed in the last eleven years
The program manager, Amnesty International,Barbara Magaji made the disclosure weekend while addressing journalists in Calabar shortly after a campaign walk against mob violence
According to her, “we conducted a research for a period of two years documenting situations that happens across the Country for a period of 11 years (2012- 2023) and found out that over 555 people have died as a result of mom violence” she stated.
She stressed further that, on the average, 55 people died yearly across the country out of mob violence, she therefore appealed to the Nigerian public not to take the laws into their hands, advising that when such situation arises, it should be reported to the relevant authorities.
Magaji stressed further that these things happen because of mistrust on what will happen if suspects are handed over to law enforcement officers.
She called on the Police to do proper investigation and the lawyers to do the needful and the judiciary to ensure speedy dispensation of cases without unnecessary adjournment for them to gain public trust and confidence.
” We are calling on the relevant law enforcement agencies, the Police and the justice actors that the populace are also saying that there is a mistrust on what will happen if they take victims to the police”.
She maintained that jungle justice is criminal, calling on Nigerians to stand up and end mob violence in Nigeria. ” This walk is a call for
Justice and action to protect everyone from mob violence”.
