2027: Why Ezza Ezekuna Elders’ endorsement of Tinubu, Nwifuru Is Irreversible, Shapes Ezza Nation’s Political Future

The decision of the Ezza Ezekuna Elders Council to endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, for re-election in 2027 has opened a significant conversation about political strategy, collective interests and the future of one of the most influential ethnic blocs in Ebonyi State.
Beyond the immediate electoral calculations, the decision reflects what the elders consider a strategic repositioning of Ezza Ezekuna within the political power structure of the state and the country.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Council, Chief Ugo Chima, a former member of the House of Representatives, and its Secretary, Dr Livinus Eze, the elders maintained that their endorsement of Tinubu, Nwifuru and other candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was irreversible and irrevocable.
They explained that the decision was informed by the need to protect the collective political, economic and developmental interests of Ezza Ezekuna rather than accommodate individual political ambitions.
The council, which comprises prominent political leaders, former senators, Julius Ucha, etc, former Secretaries to State Governments, judges, former federal commissioners, university administrators, permanent secretaries, professionals and community stakeholders, occupies an important position in the traditional political consultations of Ezza Ezekuna.
Its intervention therefore presents an opportunity to examine how collective political decisions can influence the fortunes of a people in an increasingly competitive democratic environment.
One of the central arguments advanced by the elders is that Ezza Ezekuna cannot continue to position itself permanently in opposition to the government in power without considering the consequences for its political relevance and access to opportunities.
According to them, the clan’s previous experiences of political opposition have not delivered the desired benefits, particularly in terms of political appointments, representation, influence and access to government programmes.
While democracy guarantees every individual and political group the freedom to support any political party, the elders believe that political participation must also be guided by practical considerations.
Their position is that supporting the government in power offers Ezza Ezekuna an opportunity to strengthen relationships, build confidence among political stakeholders and establish a foundation for greater participation in governance.
Politically, the endorsement could become an important instrument for repositioning Ezza Ezekuna in Ebonyi’s political equation. Political power is not acquired merely through the declaration of ambition or the presentation of candidates during elections.
It is often built through sustained relationships, political negotiations, party structures, loyalty, strategic alliances and the ability to influence decisions at different levels of government. The elders appear to be advocating a process that prioritises these elements.
For a clan with aspirations of occupying strategic political positions in the future, particularly the governorship and other influential offices, maintaining constructive relationships with the existing political establishment could prove valuable.
Supporting Tinubu and Nwifuru in 2027, according to the council’s reasoning, is not necessarily an abandonment of Ezza Ezekuna’s future ambitions but an investment in the relationships and political capital that could strengthen those ambitions.
This is where the question of 2031 becomes particularly significant. The elders’ position suggests that Ezza Ezekuna must begin laying the foundation for its future political aspirations rather than wait until the next governorship election before building alliances.
The prospect of a stronger Ezza political presence in 2031 will require preparation, consensus-building, strategic engagement and constructive relationships with other political blocs across Ebonyi State.
The anticipated political gains also extend beyond the governorship. A stronger relationship with the state and federal governments could improve the clan’s capacity to negotiate for elective positions, political appointments, federal representation, board memberships and other opportunities.
However, such opportunities would depend on sustained political engagement, demonstrated commitment and the willingness of stakeholders to translate alliances into concrete results.
Economically
The elders’ position raises an important question about the relationship between political participation and access to development opportunities. Government policies, empowerment programmes, agricultural interventions, enterprise support schemes and federal development initiatives can have direct consequences for communities.
Ezza Ezekuna, with its population, agricultural potential, commercial activities and human resources, stands to benefit from effective engagement with relevant government institutions.
Supporting the Tinubu administration could also provide an avenue for Ezza stakeholders to engage more actively with federal programmes and initiatives designed to support businesses, farmers, entrepreneurs and vulnerable households.
Similarly, a constructive relationship with the Nwifuru administration could improve the clan’s ability to communicate its economic priorities and advocate for projects that address the needs of its communities.
On Infrastructure
The decision could also have long-term implications if the political goodwill being pursued translates into tangible government interventions. Roads, electricity, healthcare facilities, schools, water supply, rural connectivity and other public infrastructure remain critical to the development of Ezza communities.
Political alignment alone does not guarantee these projects, but effective engagement with government and sustained advocacy can strengthen the prospects of attracting attention to pressing community needs.
For instance, improved road networks connecting rural communities to markets and urban centres could stimulate agricultural commerce, reduce transportation costs and encourage investment.
Better electricity supply and public facilities could also support small businesses, improve educational opportunities and enhance the quality of life. These are the practical developmental expectations that should accompany any political alliance pursued in the name of collective interest.
The developmental dimension of the endorsement is equally important. Governance is not simply about political appointments or the distribution of elective positions; it is also about the capacity of communities to attract projects, participate in policy formulation and influence decisions that affect their future.
By encouraging Ezza sons and daughters to work constructively with the ruling administrations, the elders are seeking to establish a framework through which the clan can become more visible in development conversations.
Another significant consideration is peace-building. Ezza Ezekuna has experienced security challenges, political disagreements and communal tensions in some areas. The elders have repeatedly emphasised the need for unity, peaceful coexistence and collective responsibility.
Their endorsement, therefore, can also be interpreted as an attempt to reduce unnecessary political divisions that could weaken the clan’s ability to speak with one voice on issues affecting its future.
Political competition should not be allowed to destroy relationships among brothers, families and communities. The elders’ appeal to political actors to put collective interests above personal ambitions is particularly relevant in a period when political disagreements can easily degenerate into hostility.
Their position is that Ezza Ezekuna must pursue its political aspirations through dialogue, consultation, negotiation and peaceful democratic participation rather than perpetual confrontation.
The council has also clarified that its decision does not prevent any Ezza son or daughter from pursuing political opportunities elsewhere. Rather, it maintains that the broader interest of the clan requires strategic cooperation with the government in power.
This distinction is important because the endorsement should not be interpreted as a declaration of hostility against Ezza politicians belonging to opposition parties. Instead, it represents the elders’ preferred political direction for collective engagement ahead of 2027.
The elders also drew attention to what they described as the inconsistency of some political actors who previously contested elections on opposition platforms but subsequently joined the ruling party and are now seeking re-election.
Their argument is that Ezza Ezekuna should avoid political choices that could leave the wider community isolated while individual politicians eventually pursue their interests through changing political alliances.
At the heart of the council’s position is the principle that no individual’s political ambition should supersede the collective interest of an entire people. This is a message that deserves serious consideration among Ezza political stakeholders.
Political leadership should be measured not only by the number of elections contested or offices occupied but also by the ability to build institutions, strengthen communities, secure opportunities and prepare the next generation for responsible leadership.
The endorsement of Tinubu and Nwifuru also presents an opportunity for Ezza political leaders to demonstrate that unity does not necessarily mean the absence of disagreement. Rather, it means the ability to identify common interests, negotiate differences and work towards shared objectives.
If properly managed, the council’s decision could become a platform for greater political cooperation among Ezza stakeholders, irrespective of their previous party affiliations.
Ultimately, the 2027 endorsement should be viewed within the broader context of Ezza Ezekuna’s long-term political aspirations.
The immediate objective is to support the candidates endorsed by the elders, but the larger ambition is to strengthen the clan’s political relevance, improve its access to development opportunities, consolidate relationships across the state and build the necessary alliances for future leadership opportunities in 2031 and beyond.
For Ezza Ezekuna, therefore, the real test of the elders’ decision will not simply be the electoral outcome of 2027 but the extent to which the anticipated political goodwill produces measurable benefits for the people.
If the endorsement leads to stronger political representation, improved infrastructure, economic opportunities, peaceful coexistence and a more coordinated approach to future political negotiations, it could become one of the significant strategic decisions in the clan’s contemporary political history.
The elders’ message is clear: Ezza Ezekuna must think beyond immediate political contests and begin building the relationships, influence and collective strength required to secure its place in the future of Ebonyi State.
