    UNICROSS Prioritizes Staff Welfare, Launches Maiden Staff Week

    The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Francisca Bassey, has assured staff of improved welfare, better working conditions, and strengthening of institutional bonds. 

    The VC  made this vow yesterday  during an interactive session with our Correspondent in Calabar after  the launch of the university’s maiden Staff Week, which she said is likely  to become an annual event that will foster unity, recognize contributions, and promote staff well-being.

    She averred that her administration will prioritize  staff welfare, aiming to increase productivity and promote institutional growth. 

    Bassey said the Staff Week is a “deliberate and visionary” initiative celebrated to appreciate the human capital that forms the bedrock of the university.

    The former Unical lecturer turned UNICROSS Vice Chancellor assured that the  Staff Week would become an annual event, that will be used by management of the institution to strengthen institutional bonds and promote a culture of health and excellence. 

    The Vice Chancellor stated that the policy thrust of his administration is to give priority attention to welfare of staff which she said would increase productivity of staff in the institution.

    Bassey whose approval for the position of substantive vice Chancellor by Gov. Bassey Otu, took place some months ago promising to run an inclusive government where input of staff would be honoured in decision making process.

    She urged  staff  to fully engage in the week’s activities, including medical check-ups, wellness talks, fitness sessions, and networking events.  

     Bassey said the staff week  will became necessary as it could led to institutional growth, and brings about a culture of excellence.

    The VC  described the Staff Week as  “deliberate and visionary” initiative aimed at fostering unity, recognizing contributions, and promoting the holistic well-being of both academic and non-academic staff.  

    “This is not just another calendar activity; it is a heartfelt appreciation of the human capital that forms the bedrock of our university,” The VC maintained.

    Throwing light on why she and her  team decided to embark on the 4-day Staff week event, the VC described the ceremony as a historic milestone that began with inaugural lecture, to honor, engage, and uplift the spirit of the institution’s workforce. 

    She reaffirmed her administration’s dedication to staff development, infrastructural growth, and global academic recognition.

    INEC to deploy 528 adhoc staff for Assembly by-election in Niger

    The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC is to deploy 528 poll Officials for the bye-election to fill the vacant seat of Munya State constituency in the Niger state House of Assembly.

    The seat became vacant following the death of the member representing Munya  local government in the house  Mr Joseph Haruna Suza on Friday September 13 2024 after a brief illness.

    Before his death Mr Haruna Sduza  was the Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Security and Intelligence.

    Niger state Resident Electoral Commissioner AlhajiAhmed Yushau Garki made this known during stakeholders meeting held at the commissions headquarters in the Niger state capital.

    Garki noted that submission of nominated  candidates by political parties will open on the 22nd of this month and close  on 26th of the same month after primary election, must have been concluded between the 17th and 21St of July.

    He said that the constituency has 11 registration areas, 119 polling units and 62459 registered voters.

    The resident electoral commissioner disclosed that open campaigns by the political parties will also begin on Saturday, the 2nd of August and end on the 14th of the month while the election would hold on the 16th of the same month.

    He charged the political parties to strictly abide by the timetable and also ensure they conducted their campaigns in peaceful and orderly manners while also assuring that the exercise would be  free and fair .

    Meanwhile a document sighted at the Commissions office in Minna  shows that two level continuos voters registration- Online and In person will commence nationwide on the 18th of next month for online registration and the 25th of the month for in person registration.

    The registrations according to the document will take place at INEC state offices throughout the country.

    There is however  heightened security  concerns  in Munya local government of Niger state as the Independent National Electoral Commission concludeds arrangement for  the bye election into the vacant house of Assembly seat in the local government council.

    Meanwhile, the resident  electoral Commissioner in the state Alhaji Ahmed Yushau Garki has solicited the  support  of security  agencies. 

    During a  courtesy visit on the State Police Commissioner Mr Adamu Abdullahi Elleman that  the election would hold on the 16th of August. 

    Yushau Garki said he had paid  a courtesy  visit  to the State Commissioner of Polic to intimate him of the plans and to seek the buy-in of the force for the success of the election.

    He submitted that  it was important to inform the Police of the plan because of the  “volatile nature of the areas where the election will take place” and because ” security has a big role to play in the conduct of free and fair election”

    In his remarks  Commissioner of Police Mr Adamu Abdullahi Elleman  expressed satisfaction  at the cordial working relationship between both bodies and promised to improve on it, in order to foster a renewed synergy and collaboration. 

    He assured the REC of the Command’s support and assistance where necessary to ensure that the Commission’s goals were achieved.

  • Plateau: HoS tasks over 3000 newly employed staff to obey govt. policies

    The head of Civil Service in Plateau state, Rauta Dakok has tasked over 3000 newly employed staff to learned about the core values of the Civil Service, and familiarize themselves with the procedures that guide their work as civil servants towards productivity.

    The Nations News Nigeria reports that the state government led by governor Caleb Mutfwang recently recruited over 3000 workers to fill in some vacancies and inject new bloods, to boost productivity in the civil service of the state.

    Dakok made this known while declaring open a two days courses for the newly employed staff held at Crest Hotel in Jos, the Plateau State Capital.

    She charged them to bring to bear their fresh ideas to further grow the civil service which is in needs of innovations as the engine room of government.

    According to her, “The Civil Service is built on a foundation of excellence, teamwork, and a shared commitment to making a difference in the State we serve. You are joining us at a time when we are poised to achieve greater heights, and your contributions will be integral to our continued success.

    “As you go through this orientation program, you will have the opportunity to meet with leaders from different Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) within and outside the state, learn about the core values of the Civil Service, and familiarize yourself with the policies and procedures that guide our work.” She charged them

    Dakok noted that the program was designed not only to equipped them with the knowledge and tools they need to perform their roles effectively but also to help them feel a part of the civil servants community where every individual is valued and every idea is welcomed.

    “We believe in fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation. Your fresh perspectives and unique experiences are invaluable assets that will enrich the Service and help us grow. 

    “I encourage you to be curious, ask questions, and take full advantage of the resources available to you. Remember, you are not just joining the Service; you are becoming a part of a team that is committed to achieving excellence together.” She reminded them

    She however applauded governor Caleb Mutfwang for given much attention to human capital development in the state as well as remaining passionately committed to the welfare of workers to the full extent of the resources available.

    Permanent Secretary Establishment Mr. Patience Dongjur in her remarks noted that the orientation program is the first of it’s kind in the history of Plateau State which armed newly employed persons with basic knowledge of the civil service as they undertook their journey in lives into the service.

    The participants across ministries, department and agencies were exposed to various topics ranging from; “Politics and loyalty in the Civil Service. Preparation for retirement of a Civil servant. Health insurance for civil servants. Synopsis on an ideal Civil servant. Procedure of appointment and exit from the civil service. Housing for civil servants; Communication and branding, and the Role of Civil Service Commission.” Respectively
