The national leader of Anyigaemeya Movement, Comrade Innocent Igiri, has called on the Ebonyi State Government to respect the human rights of social media critic, Chinyere Nwele, amid concerns over her continued detention in security custody.

Igiri, who made the call on Monday, criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government in the state over what he described as the continued incarceration of Nwele, urging the authorities to ensure that her fundamental rights were protected.

The Nations News reports that Anyigaemeya Movement is a political mobilization group supporting the governorship ambition of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in Ebonyi State, Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii.

In a statement signed by Igiri and made available to journalists in Abakaliki, the group expressed concern over Nwele’s reported detention, describing her arrest and continued stay in security custody as unnecessary and unwarranted.

The group leader argued that Nwele’s reported advocacy for good governance should not be a reason to infringe on her fundamental rights, stressing the importance of protecting citizens’ freedom to express their views on public affairs.

Igiri urged the Ebonyi State Government to ensure that the matter was handled in accordance with the law and respect for the rights guaranteed to citizens under the Constitution.

He further called on the relevant security agencies to uphold due process in dealing with the matter and ensure that Nwele’s rights were not violated during the course of any investigation.

According to the statement, the group believes that citizens should be able to express concerns about governance without fear of unlawful restrictions, while also acknowledging that any allegations requiring investigation should be addressed through lawful procedures.

Igiri maintained that respect for fundamental human rights was essential to democratic governance, urging the state government and security agencies to demonstrate their commitment to the rule of law in handling the matter.

The group called for appropriate action by the relevant authorities to address concerns surrounding Nwele’s continued detention, while urging all parties to ensure that the issue was resolved in line with the law and constitutional safeguards.
