  • Group demands effective gender equality, social inclusion of women, others in Akwa-ibom

    Group known as Kebetkeche Women Resource Development Centre has called for effective gender equality and social inclusion of women, children and persons with disabilities in Akwa-ibom state.

    The organization, however demanded for the domestication of the National Gender Policy (NGP) in Akwa Ibom State to ensure effective development in the various communities of the state.

    The Executive Director of Kebetkeche Center, Emem Okon made this known during the Community and Advocacy dialogue with stakeholders and Community leaders,, supported by Mac Arthur Foundation and WRAPA  on “Gender equality and Social Inclusion” that took place in Ikot Ekpene local government area of the state.

    Okon represented by the Communications Officer, Nsemeke Fabian Asanga regretted that in-spite of numerous benefits of the NGP since its enactment  in 2006 and review in 2021, it still floats at the national level without being domesticated and implemented at the state and local levels in the state.

    Okon explained that the policy, if implemented would encourage social inclusion and ensure that women, children and people with disability are carried along in the scheme of things and in development process.

    According to her, “What we are doing is to advocate for the implementation and domestication of the National Gender Policy in the State. So we are here in Ikot otu in Ikot Ekpene local government to advocate to the community leaders and the people that if this policy is implemented, it will promote gender equality and social inclusion.

    “We have also advocated to legislative members even the female legislators of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and we hope that the state will soon adopt it and we will further mainstream it to different local governments in the state.”

    Earlier, in her paper entitled, ” Using Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) to Promote Community Development,” the Resource person, Constance Meju noted that community leaders should understand that the world is striving to bridge the inequality gap in the  society because of its damaging and retrogressive impacts.

    Meju harped on the need for community leaders and policy makers to conduct assessment needs of both men and women including the vulnerable and people living with disabilities in the society before embarking on any project, programmes or policies to ensure total inclusion and high impact.

    While calling for domestication of NGP in the state, Meju encouraged women to prepare themselves, mentally, socially and psychologically to participate actively and serve in any opportunity that comes up.

    She added, “We need more women in Community Development Committees, PIA Community Trust Funds, Youth and Social Organizations Local Government Councils and Committees State and National Assemblies. 

    “Women should be involved in healthcare decision making because women have peculiar health needs and as womb of society their health status determines the health of the society.” She stressed.

    A female Chief, Obongawan Grace Ukut called for equal rights for both male and female children in the family and in communities, frowning at situations where preferences were given to the male,  even as she noted that with NGP in place in her community, such issues would be addressed.

    An Islamic cleric based in Kogi State who is the Chief Imam of Babanagari Jumar Mosque New Layout Lokoja Idowu Zubair has appealed to the Federal government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the State governors to urgently address the sufferings of Nigerians.

    Zubair made this appeal while speaking with newsmen in Kogi shortly after leading prayers to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration in the state.

    He noted that Nigerians are facing the worst  hardship in the history of the Country.

    The cleric, Zubair, stressed that the government should use this festive season to sacrifice for the people which signifies the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

    “The leadership of Nigeria both the Federal and State government should fear God. They should know that the masses are suffering. The critical condition of Nigerians is getting beyond control. Almighty Allah is the one that put them there. 

    “They didn’t put themselves there. We elected them to solve our problem but what we are experiencing is getting out of hand.

    “The removal of fuel subsidy contributed more to the present sufferings of Nigerians. The way food item has risen is beyond the masses. Masses are dying and it only our leaders that can come to our aide” he lamented.

    He explained that the significance of Eid-el-Kabir celebration is useful for both Muslims and None Muslims, adding that the day thought the world how to fulfill promises as directed by Almighty Allah.

    He said “Our noble Prophet Ibrahim fulfil his promise to Almighty Allah, which he later reciprocated it with a ram. What ever condition we find ourselves, let us be thankful to Almighty Allah especially with the situation we found ourselves in Nigeria. 

    “When there is life, there is hope. We should be more prayerful, watchful and careful to whatever critical situation we find ourselves. Almighty Allah will solve the problem of this nation” he stated.

  • Ex- PDP chairman, Adamu urges Muslims to pray for Nigeria’s unity , peace

    The former chairman of the People’s Democratic party, PDP, in Bogoro local government area of Bauchi State, Andarawus Adamu on Sunday urged Muslims to pray for the sustainability of peace and unity of Nigeria.

    He felicitated with the Muslim faithful as they celebrate the 2024 sallah Celebration across the country.

    In a press statement signed and made available to newsmen in Bauchi, said that it’s only by prayers that  people will leave peacefully with each other.

    Andarawus Adamu who is also the former councillor representing Gobbiya ward, Bogoro local government area of Bauchi State congratulate the Muslim Communities on the occasion of their 2024 Eid el-Kabir Sallah celebrations

    He said that “As you gear up to celebrate Eidul Kabir, I extend my heartfelt greetings and warm wishes to all Muslims in Bogoro, Bauchi State and Nigeria at whole. This blessed occasion reminds you of the values of sacrifice, endurance, and devotion to Allah”

    He urged them to pray for economic recovery, national security, and the well-being of every Nigerian. Adding that collective prayers and efforts will pave the way for a brighter and more prosperous future for all people.

    According to the former Party chairman, “The Eid el-Kabir is held to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion to Allah (SWT) and his readiness to sacrifice his son, Ismail. At the very point of sacrifice, Allah (SWT) replaced Ismail with a ram, which was slaughtered in place of his son”

    Adding that “This command from Allah (SWT) was a test of Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness and commitment to obey his Lord’s command, without question. Therefore, Eid el- Kabir means the festival of sacrifice”

    “I pray that the sacrifices of the Muslims be handsomely rewarded by Allah (SWT). May the spirits lof sacrifice, cordial neighbourliness and selflessness be our guide as we celebrate this Sallah. May Allah accept,good deeds and alleviate your sufferings and forgive your transgressions”

    He call on the Muslim Communities to use the occasion to remember the sacrifice and obedience of Prophet Ibrahim to the will of Allah and always submit themselves to the will of the Almighty and in service to humanity. 

    The former Party chairman of Bogoro, Honorable Andarawus Adamu appealed to Nigerians, irrespective of their religion, to devote their prayers during the Eid el-Kabir festival to Allah (SWT) to bring to an end the numerous social and economic challenges facing the country and restore unity among the citizenry.

    “As you celebrate Eid El Kabir, may this joyous occasion bring peace, prosperity, and happiness to your homes. Let’s embrace the spirit of sacrifice, unity, and compassion. Wishing you all a blessed and fulfilling Eid.

  • Ex-reps aspirant, Idrufem charges Muslims to uphold peace, order in Kogi

    The former House of Representatives aspirant for Kabba/Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency, Idris Oluwafemi Idrufem has tasked Muslims to imbible the spirit of selflessness, peace, kindness, love and sacrifice as exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim.

    Idrufem, a community leader, made this known in a statement signed and issued to newsmen to mark this year’s Eid-El-Kibir celebration in the country.

    He charged Muslims both at home and in diaspora to use the period of Eid-El-Kibir to pray for peace, unity, prosperity, economic and social development in Kogi state and Nigeria at large

    According to him: “I congratulate kogites and Nigerians who have been able to undertake the Hajj in fulfillment of their religious obligations. 

    “As they undergo the rites of the Hajj in the Holy Land, and celebrate the feast of sacrifice here at home, I urge our Muslim faithful to offer special prayer for us to witness development of our dear Kogi state in particular and Nigeria at large. 

    Idrufem appealed to Muslim faithful not to allow the lesson of the celebration to be lost in the merry making, but rather uphold it and sustain it in their daily activities. 

    He appealed to individuals to come to the rescue and assist the less privileged living around them, to help them cushion the hard economic challenges facing Nigerians.

    “As we are celebrating the Eid-El-Kibir, we must look around us to help those in need. We must help the less privileged. We must sacrifice our time and genuine love at this period for another and continue to pray for the prosperity and development of our land” he stated.

  • Eid-el-Kabir: ‘we will unite, for the peace, progress of Kogi-NMA assures Gov. Ododo

    The  Nigeria Medical Association, (NMA) Kogi State chapter has assured the governor of the State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo of its preparedness to work for the unity and progress of the state.

    The association, equally felicitated with the governor, Ododo, especially for the prompt payment of salaries to doctors, which according to them, enabled the doctors to celebrate this year’s Eid-el-Kabir.

    In a statement signed by the Kogi State NMA Chairman, Baoku Olusola and made available to newsmen on sunday applauded the Governor for the prompt payment of doctors salaries.

    According to the statement, the Governor’s gesture in paying salaries before June 17 has enabled doctors to celebrate this years Eid-el-Kabir with much money on their hands to give to their families for this festive season.

    “NMA in Kogi State is felicitating with our Muslims brothers and sisters, including the Governor of Kogi State on the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir celebration. 

    “As the season signifies sacrifice as exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim, it is expected of us to show much love, unite, for the peace and progress of Kogi State and Nigeria in general. NMA is happy with the things happening in Kogi State under Governor Ododo.

    “This is the first of it kind in the history of Kogi State that salaries were paid before 17th of the month. Doctors will forever be grateful to our performing Governor who is doctors and workers friendly. We must commend him for his good work in the State” the statement added.

    Olusola, further assured that the association will give maximum support to governor Ododo, to enable him succeed in office and deliver the dividend of democracy to the people of Kogi State.

    It was learnt that Eid-el-Kabir, also known as Eid al-Adha, is a significant religious festival celebrated by Muslims around the world to commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim  to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God.

    University of Calabar risks losing accreditation of 4 Courses

    Four courses at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) are likely not to be accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as the Commission has published a list of programs that have received full accreditation.

    The Nations News Nigeria cited Documents signed by the Acting Director of Accreditation at NUC, Abraham Chundusu, titled “Summary of Results from the October/November 2023 Comprehensive Accreditation Exercise,” indicates that disciplines such as Law, Anatomy, Physics, Forest & Wildlife Management currently hold interim accreditation status.

    The National Universities Commission is the agency of the Federal Government in charge of accreditation of courses in Nigerian universities, and the commission is empowered by law to set minimum academic standards for universities and accredit their degree programmes.

    The document emphasized how Undergraduate programmes is evaluated for accreditation. It stated that Full Accreditation Status is valid for five years, while Interim Accreditation Status lasts for two years and will be reassessed. If a programme receives Interim Accreditation Status twice in a row, it will be denied Full Accreditation Status.

    However, the Faculty of Engineering & Technology at the University of Calabar is excited to announce that they have received full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC). 

    It was gathered that through a thorough assessment and dedicated efforts, five departments under the faculty have achieved full accreditation, highlighting the university’s dedication to providing high-quality engineering education.

    The accredited departments include: Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering.

    Furthermore, the document noted that the implementation of the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) commenced in 2023/2024 academic session with students admitted into 100 level, stressing that the university is expected to ensure compliance in the utilisation of the CCMAS for all programmes.

    Efforts to reach the institution’s public relations officer (PRO) to comment on the issue proved abortive as he wasn’t taking his calls or responding to Whatsapp messages at the time of filing this report.

    The Bauchi State government led by governor, Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir has through the governing council of the state university (BASUG) renamed the varsity after Sa’adu Zungur.

    The governing Council who officially approved and implemented the decision of the governor, said that the varsity will henceforth be called Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU).

    The chairman governing council of the institution, Prof. Ango Abdullahi said that the renaming of the University followed the signing into law a bill by the state governor, Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir.

    Abdullahi made this known in a statement signed and issued to newsmen in Buachi by the public relations officer of the institution Auwal Hassan.

    He said that the decision of the governing council to rename the university to Sa’adu Zungur University was reached during a meeting held at the Yuli campus.

    Prof. Abdullahi, who is the Pro-Chancellor of the University expressed the Council’s unanimous decision to adopt the new name in honour of the late Nigerian nationalist and politician, Sa’adu Zungur.

    He noted that the decision to rename the university was backed by a bill passed by the State House of Assembly and signed into law by the Buachi state governor, Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir.

    The governing council, however expressed its full support for the renaming of the university, emphasizing the importance of honoring the memory of individuals who have played pivotal roles in shaping the history and identity of the nation.

    “Governor Bala Mohammed’s initiative to rename the university after Sa’adu Zungur has been widely praised by various stakeholders, including faculty members, alumni, and the general public. 

    “The decision reflects a deep sense of appreciation for the sacrifices and achievements of Sa’adu Zungur in the service of the people.

    Responding, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Fatimah Tahir, said that the renaming of the Bauchi State University to Sa’adu Zungur University is a symbolic gesture that underscores the values of integrity, leadership, and excellence that the university upholds. 

    Fatimah said It serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Sa’adu Zungur and his enduring impact on the educational landscape of Bauchi State.

    “The Council is however committed to ensuring a smooth transition process and implementing the necessary changes to reflect the new name of the university. The university community is encouraged to embrace this historic decision with pride and a renewed sense of purpose.

    “The Council, therefore seeks to celebrate the contributions of Sa’adu Zungur and inspire the university community to uphold the values of integrity, leadership, and service that he exemplified.

    “The decision to rename Bauchi State University to Sa’adu Zungur University reflects the institution’s commitment to honoring Nigeria’s heritage, promoting national unity, and fostering a spirit of excellence among its students, faculty, and staff. 

    Fatimah Tahir noted further that “this change will serve as a symbol of the university’s dedication to academic excellence and societal impact.

    “The transition to Sa’adu Zungur University marks a new chapter in the institution’s journey, one that emphasizes the importance of preserving history, recognizing national heroes, and instilling a sense of pride and purpose in the university community” he stressed.

  • Woman paralyzed after being tortured by Anti squad in Onitsha

    The chairman of Civil Liberties Organization, CLO,  Anambra state chapter, Vincent Ezekwueme, has condemned in totality the alleged torture of a woman by the Anti Touting squad, which resulted to her being paralyzed since after the day of the incident.

    Ezekwueme who was flanked by his Secretary, Chidi Mbah, and other members of CLO that included Vincent Udeh and C.Y Umeh, decried the attitude of the anti touting squad and urged Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo to come to the rescue of the victim.

    Recall that few months ego,  Mrs.Nkemakolam Nnamani, of 87 Oraifite Street, Awada Obosi, Idemili North council Area, was tortured, brutalized and wounded by officials of Anti-Touting Squad at Upper Iweka, near TRACAS bus-stop, and for the past three months she has been visiting many hospitals, just because she pleaded to the team to stop beating an elderly woman.

    “My offence was that I was in a bus going to Asaba and I saw the team beating an elderly woman and pleaded to the team to forgive her. Immediately, one of them rushed to the bus, hit me with pestle and dragged me out of the bus and all of them descended on me, took me to their torture camp and beat me to coma. 

    “When I regained consciousness, they extorted #15,000 from me, saying that I should know how to keep my mouth shut. They once visited me because they crippled me with their pestle and became incapacitated. They gave me #50,000 and since then, about three months now, I have been incapacitated,” she cried.

    ” I am now incapacitated as I neither walk nor work. I can not wish my enemy what they did to me. When they were brutalizing me, an old woman, I pleaded to them to spare my life and one of them, Kabaka, used pistle, hammer and other weapons on me and disfigured by leg and since them i have been treating myself and it has engulfed huge sum without improvement.

    “The only concern shown by the perpetrators was when one Mr.Kendo visited me and gave me pantry #50,000,  I am calling on Gov. Soludo, Mrs Nonye Soludo and Human Rights Organizations to come to my aid.I am dying and my children no longer go to school as I am still owing those I borrowed money from for my treatment,” she further disclosed.

    The CLO boss urged governor Soludo to visit her, pay her hospital bills and rehabilitate her financially 

    Stating, “We appeal to Anambra State government and security agents to fish out the perpetrators to face full wrath of the law.

    Condemning the action of the Anti Touting squad also, Comrade Vincent Udeh said that  Anti-Touting, ARTMA, Ocha Brigade, among others have become torns in the fresh of the people in the state and and appealed to Governor Soludo to overhaul the system and inject patriotic,selfless and God fearing citizens in the agencies for optimal results.

    “On Wednesday June 12, Àn ti Touting Squad arrested Citizen Samuel Ezeh, at Upper Iweka, for urinating inside gutter.They took him and others to their torture  camp and after payment of #15000 the victim was released.

  • FRSC deploys 701 personnel for Eid-El-Kabir Special Patrol in Enugu

     The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has deployed over 701 personnel for its Eid-El-Kabir Special Patrol to ensure free flow of traffic within road corridors in Enugu State.

    The Sector Commander of FRSC Enugu State Command, Mr Adeyemi Sokunbi, made this known in a statement signed and issued to journalists by the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, on Eid-El-Kabir Special Patrol in Enugu.

    Sokunbi noted that the Corps had also deployed 17 vehicles for the special patrol, adding that it included: 11 patrol vehicles, one ambulance, one tow truck, two administrative vehicles and two motorbikes.

    According to him, the week-long special patrol started on June 14 and will end on June 22; “while among 701 personnel deployed, we have 438 FRSC regular marshals and 263 FRSC special marshals for Enugu State.

    The sector commander noted that reflective jackets, traffic cones, tyre pressure gauges, a number of extricating machines and digital breathalyzers are part of the tools set aside for the special patrol operation.  

                                                                                      He said: “I wish to relate to you some of the critical road traffic management issues as well as the strategies we have put in place to ensure that our roads are safe for all to use.

    “I say this because; recent developments on our road reveal some of the challenges confronting safe use of the highways which the Corps has stepped up to confront on all fronts.

    “These challenges include the ugly trend of using trailers and trucks to convey human beings, night trips, fatigue, speed violations, driving under influence, as well as overloading of vehicles.”

    He said to combat these ugly trends and meet up with the changing times; especially developments coming from these unsafe behaviors like the use of trailers to convey passengers, the Corps introduced some key safety initiatives to tackle the menace.

    “One of these is the result oriented efforts that have been directed towards effective collaboration with the State Judiciary for timely prosecution of drivers and vehicle owners caught contravening established traffic regulations like overloading, dangerous driving, use of phone and speeding.

    “These violations will be tamed through the instrumentally of mobile court operations.

    “Another key road traffic infraction we have stepped up against is driving under the influence of alcohol and other substances.

    “The Corps in collaboration with beer Sectorial Group has been able to make available adequate breathalyzers which have been deployed to motor parks and highways to check and stop drivers who control the wheels under alcohol and substance influence.

    “This is to minimize tendencies of fatalities on our roads as most of the drivers who indulge in substance before mounting on the wheel always end up in fatal crashes,” he said.

    He noted that the FRSC is doing aggressive sensitization to all road users in their door steps especially drivers’ loading bays, camps and parks to appeal to the conscience of these drivers against unnecessary contravention of traffic rules.

    The commander said that during the special patrol, the Corps would carry out aggressive enforcement including conducting Mobile Courts operations, with the aim of checking the following offences:

    “Speeding and dangerous driving/overtaking; lane indiscipline/route violation; road obstructions; use of phone while driving; overloading; and seat-belt/child restraint use violations.

    “Others are: Passenger’s manifest violation; operation of mechanical deficient and rickety vehicles; loading of trailers with passengers and illegal use of spy number plates among others,” he said.

    Sokunbi noted that when drivers drive recklessly, “it is your right as commuters to speak up and report such drivers to FRSC operatives or any other security outposts on the highways”.

    The managers of transport companies, who attended the briefing, commended the FRSC for its speed in rescuing road crashes victims and their follow-up on accident victims in hospitals, especially the recent Ugwu-Onyema accident along Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

    The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has decried the great harvest lost in north east Nigeria and however sensitized farmers on short time varieties as a way of boosting the economy of Buachi state through agriculture.

    The sensitization seminar which took place at the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) LCC Birshi Gandu, RCC Kagadama, Bauchi state was attended by over one hundred church members. 

    The deputy director of NOA, Adamu Umar Sarkin Yara who spoke during the seminar, said that for the past one year, the North East Nigeria have been having serious harvest losses, particularly Bauchi State and the factors are attributed to climate and inability of the farmers.

    He said: “Most of our farmers are farming outdated seeds that are not climate friendly, so we are now creating awareness to farmers to know the dangers of planting seeds that are not compliance with the current weather separated by nimcet across the state”

    He urged farmers to go for seeds that are early maturity days especially that the weather focus of Bauchi State by nimect, adding that the rain fall in the state will stabilize from 1st week of June and may likely sized by 5th of November that is the automatically the average of 120 days of rainfall in Bauchi State.

    “We are encouraging farmers to go for seeds that will not exit 120 days, because planting 120 days will bring bumper harvest and if farmers have bumper harvest this year, it will definitely reduce poverty and hardship in Nigeria”

    According to him: “In the area of climate harvest losses, if farmers are able to meet up with those early harvest seeds, it will help them alot, the seed have 3 things: early harvest, bumper harvest, and high yield, it will be resistant’ he stressed.
