2027: Benue can translate its electoral strength into greater nat’l influence- Showumi
From Attah Ede, Makurdi
The National Convener of The Alternative Movement and a member of the media and communications team of the All Progressives Congress(APC) 2027 presidential campaign organisation, Otunba Segun Showunmi, has stated that effective mobilisation, coalition-building and political unity were essential for the North-Central region to translate its electoral strength into greater national influence.
He further stated that Benue could increase its influence in national politics by mobilising its voting population and participating effectively in elections.
Showunmi maintained that with the approximately 3.05 million registered voters in the state, a substantial electoral participation could strengthen Benue’s bargaining power at the national level.
The Convener of the Movement who spoke during his interactive session with Journalists in Makurdi, Thursday, appealed to Benue residents to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC in 2027 for more development strides in the State.
He emphasised the importance of professional journalism, political unity, economic reforms and sustained efforts to address insecurity in Benue State.
He urged journalists to promote accurate reporting, responsible political communication and public trust while helping to moderate political tensions and discourage the spread of false information, adding that his team’s visit to Benue was part of the APC’s preparations for the 2027 general election.
“The team sought to assess public opinion about President Bola Tinubu’s administration, understand residents’ expectations and gauge the president’s political support in the state.
“My interactions with residents, political stakeholders, women, youths and members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council had been encouraging. Many expressed appreciation for the Federal Government and the administration of Gov. Hyacinth Alia. However, these were his observations rather than findings from a representative opinion survey.
Speaking on the political developments in the State, Showunmi appealed to political leaders in the State to close ranks, set aside their differences and unite ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Showunmi warned that political rivalries must not overshadow the urgent need to tackle insecurity, youth unemployment and other challenges confronting the state, saying that leaders must place the collective interest of Benue above personal ambitions and partisan differences.
On security, he said the Federal Government had reorganised the country’s security architecture and established military formations in the region to strengthen protection for residents.
He urged the people to remain hopeful, noting that the challenges facing Benue had attracted wider national and international attention.
Showunmi, however, stressed that external interventions must be matched with collective efforts by political leaders, families and community stakeholders to restore peace, improve security and advance the state’s political fortunes.
He also urged residents to assess the performance of the current administration against those of previous governments, citing roads that had remained unattended for years but were now receiving attention.
Similarly, the state coordinator of the movement, Adai Edwin Adai, called on Governor Hyacinth Alia, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, and other political leaders to sheathe their swords, embrace dialogue and reconcile their differences in the interest of peace and a successful 2027 general election.
Adai, who is also the movement’s Director of Planning, Operations, Policy and Administration, said reconciliation did not require political leaders to abandon their legitimate positions but demanded a willingness to listen, make compromises and prioritise the public interest.
He warned that ordinary citizens bore the greatest burden of prolonged political tension, particularly farmers who needed security to cultivate their land, traders seeking a stable business environment, unemployed youths yearning for opportunities and vulnerable households dependent on social support.
“Our plea for reconciliation is not merely about political relationships. It is about the lives and livelihoods of ordinary citizens who bear the consequences when political tension becomes too high,” he said.
Adai urged political actors to strengthen democracy by maintaining peace despite their differences and ensuring that governance translated into tangible benefits for the people through improved security, quality education, healthcare, infrastructure and economic opportunities.
He acknowledged Governor Alia’s efforts in road construction, primary healthcare and other intervention programmes.
The director appealed to political leaders to place the welfare of the people above personal interests and political calculations.
