In the heart of Anambra State, we are witnessing a remarkable transformation in healthcare. This journey began with the vision of creating a state-of-the-art medical facility that would not only serve the immediate community but also set a benchmark for healthcare delivery across Nigeria. This vision was realized through groundbreaking and subsequent commissioning activities at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital’s (NAUTH) Permanent Site in Nnewi on Wednesday, July 17. The milestone celebrating the first anniversary of its official commissioning and final relocation of the hospital to the permanent site stands as a testament to what can be achieved through visionary leadership, strategic investment, and collaborative effort.

The NAUTH Permanent Site project, which is a medical megacity, is the result of three years of audacious but meticulous planning, construction, and evaluation. It’s a 2000-bed capacity complex built on 100 hectares of land featuring state-of-the-art facilities, including a 240-bed Trauma and Emergency Complex, a 200-bed Pediatrics Emergency Complex, a 200-bed Medical Ward Complex, a 200-bed Surgical Ward Complex, a 120-bed Mother and Childcare Building, a Radiology Building, a General Outpatient Department Complex, as well as many specialist clinics. 

The presence of two oxygen production plants with an aggregate capacity of 200 cylinders a day further ensures not only self-sufficiency in medical oxygen but also a steady supply to the surrounding facilities. Indeed, the NAUTH Medical Megacity Project is poised to transform healthcare delivery not just in Nigeria but in the entire West Africa sub-region.

These facilities are more than just buildings; they are vital healthcare infrastructures. The Trauma and Emergency Complex will provide immediate care for accident victims and those in critical conditions, significantly reducing mortality rates. 

The Pediatrics Emergency Complex will ensure that our youngest citizens and the most vulnerable receive timely and specialized care. The Medical Ward Complex offers comprehensive medical inpatient services, while the Mother and Childcare Complex caters to the specific needs of pregnant women and their newborns. 

The Radiology Building is equipped with cutting-edge radio-diagnostic equipment crucial for accurate and timely diagnosis, and the General Outpatient Department Complex ensures accessible and continuous care for the broader population.

Why this is Important

The transformation of the NAUTH Permanent Site is not merely a local achievement but a national milestone in healthcare development. It exemplifies the impact of visionary leadership and strategic investment in uplifting healthcare standards. The improvements in healthcare infrastructure directly contribute to better health outcomes, lower mortality rates, and increased accessibility to quality care for all Nigerians. The achievements at NAUTH are closely aligned with the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Initiative (NHSRII), a strategic framework built on four pillars: improving governance of the health sector, enhancing population health outcomes, unlocking the healthcare value chain, and ensuring health security. These principles are seamlessly integrated into the hospital’s development and operations, underscoring the importance of a structured approach to healthcare advancement.

The NHSRII, through the Compact and the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp), emphasizes coordinated efforts between federal and state governments, development partners, and private sector entities. This integration ensures that resources are effectively utilized and that there is a unified approach to tackling healthcare challenges. 

The development of NAUTH exemplifies these principles, showcasing the power of strategic thinking and partnerships through a 10-year development plan aimed at positioning the institution to be among the top three health facilities in Nigeria by 2030.

Visionary Leadership Catalyzed by National Support

The remarkable progress at NAUTH has been significantly catalyzed by the visionary leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate. Their unwavering support and strategic direction have been instrumental in fostering an environment where ambitious projects like the NAUTH Permanent Site can flourish. Their commitment to healthcare excellence, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda, has provided the necessary impetus for transformative initiatives.

“Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge,” said Simon Sinek. This philosophy resonates deeply with the leadership shown by President Tinubu and Hon. Pate, whose guidance has empowered institutions like NAUTH to strive for excellence. 

The government’s whole-of-society approach has fostered an environment where public and private sectors collaborate effectively to achieve common goals.

The Impact of Collaborative Effort

The success of the NAUTH projects underscores the transformative power of collaboration. Emeka Offor, with his unwavering commitment to healthcare, significantly funded the Medical Ward Complex, showcasing the remarkable impact one individual’s vision and dedication can achieve. Cletus Ibeto, CON, demonstrated extraordinary generosity by establishing the General Outpatient Department (GOPD) Complex as well as the Accident & Emergency Complex. 

Equally, the contribution of late senator Ifeanyi Ubah played a pivotal role by mobilizing the Anambra Progressives to fund the Medical Outpatient Clinic. Beyond collaboration with individuals, the NAUTH project showcases what can be achieved by collaboration among government agencies. 

The Mother & Child Complex, the Children’s Emergency Complex, as well as the Intensive Care Units, were all part of the health interventions of the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, while the Oxygen Plant project is part of the multibillion health intervention by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas project.

These remarkable individuals and government agencies have shown that when all segments of society unite, they can achieve incredible feats. Their support and dedication highlight the immense impact of collective effort in transforming healthcare for the better.

It’s a Global Best Practice

The spirited collaboration and partnership ongoing in Nnewi and other parts of the country resonate with what’s obtainable in other regions of the world. Indeed, that has been how public health has robustly evolved – strong collaboration by the private sector much more than by government alone.

Globally, numerous examples illustrate how private sector involvement and philanthropic initiatives have significantly advanced healthcare. John D. Rockefeller’s establishment of the Rockefeller Foundation in the early 20th century revolutionized public health, funding medical research and establishing institutions like the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, which later became Rockefeller University. His initiatives laid the groundwork for modern public health systems and medical research advancements.

Similarly, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (Gates Foundation) has made monumental contributions to global health through extensive funding and innovative health programs. In India, Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Foundation has established numerous healthcare facilities and mobile medical units, providing crucial health services to underserved populations.

Back home, the Dangote Foundation has made significant strides in healthcare by building hospitals and funding health programs. Within Africa, the Nelson Mandela Foundation in South Africa has also been instrumental in addressing health issues, particularly HIV/AIDS, through awareness campaigns and support for medical research. In Kenya, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) has established hospitals and clinics that provide high-quality healthcare services across the region.

Rwanda’s healthcare system has seen remarkable improvements due to a strong commitment from the government, support from international partners, and community-based health insurance schemes.

Nigeria is on the right path with the NHSRII, as the collaborative efforts seen at NAUTH attest. Harnessing the strengths of various stakeholders enables the building of a resilient healthcare system that meets the needs of all our citizens.

Boosting Quality Healthcare through Collaborative Funding and Insurance Coverage

The improvements at NAUTH are part of a broader strategy to boost quality healthcare across Nigeria. The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (FMOHSW), along with its partners, is ramping up funding and extending health insurance coverage through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF). This initiative aims to strengthen Primary Health Care (PHC) systems nationwide, ensuring that even the most remote communities have access to essential health services.

The expertise and advanced facilities at NAUTH and other secondary and tertiary care centers will greatly benefit PHCs by providing a referral network that ensures continuity of care. Patients can receive primary care at local health centers and be referred to specialized facilities like NAUTH for more complex treatments. This integrated approach enhances the overall healthcare delivery system, ensuring that all Nigerians receive the care they need.

The Path Forward

The commissioning of the NAUTH Permanent Site is not just a celebration of past accomplishments but a reaffirmation of our commitment to a brighter future for healthcare in Anambra State and Nigeria at large. As we look to the future, it is clear that challenges remain that will require even more robust collaboration. Continued efforts are necessary to ensure that every Nigerian has access to quality health services.

While Nigeria may be navigating through challenging times, the focus on healthcare transformation is a beacon of hope. Beginning with improving health is indeed the right path, as health is wealth. With collective effort and unwavering resolve, there is confidence that we can build a better country for future generations.

As Muhammad Ali Pate remarked, “Our commitment to health is our commitment to our people. Healthcare transcends politics and unites us all in a common goal: to ensure the best possible health outcomes for every Nigerian. Investing in health is investing in the future of Nigeria.”

To achieve this vision, we call on banks, high-net-worth individuals, and large body corporates to invest in health. This investment need not be limited to building medical complexes; it can extend to funding community health programs, supporting health education initiatives, and providing resources for preventive care. By investing in health, we create wealth not only at a national level but also within our communities, fostering a healthier, more productive population that can drive Nigeria’s development forward. Additionally, such investments could include establishing faculty chairs, scholarships, mentorship programs, and research grants. For example, Muhammad Ali Pate is the inaugural holder of the Julio Frenk endowed Professor of Public Health Leadership at the Harvard T.H. Chan School, demonstrating how endowed positions can foster academic excellence and innovation in healthcare. Similar programs at Ivy League universities in America and other prestigious institutions globally have shown how such investments can lead to significant advancements in health research, education, and practice. These initiatives not only enhance healthcare but also build a pipeline of skilled professionals.

It’s been said that “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” The NAUTH story is a milestone in Nigeria’s concerted journey to improved quality health outcomes through the visionary and strategic leadership of Mr. President under the Renewed Hope Agenda. As a country, we are individually and collectively responsible for our health and that of our fellows. This is the letter and spirit of the Compact and Sector-Wide Approach being orchestrated by the Coordinating Minister under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative.

Adamawa govt begins fumigation of houses to avert further spread of cholera

In an effort to prevent the spread of cholera outbreak in the state , the Adamawa state government has embarked on fumigation of homes, major drainages and refuge dumps in Yola and Jimeta towns to contain outbreak of cholera, mosquitoes and other pests in the state

The outbreak of cholera, had so far claimed over 12 lives, with 304 others hospitalised. 

While Addressing the fumigators, on behalf of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Commissioner for Education, Dr Umar Garba-Pella, directed them to ensure house-to- house disinfectants of over 20 wards in the metropolis and extend the same to the 21 LGAs.

Pella said, the government had dedicated the September, monthly sanitation exercise to curb cholera adding, the fumigators should ensure  desilting the drainages to facilitate the free flow of water to contain flooding.

He urged residents to support the exercise, adding that fumigation and other sprays would destroy dangerous insects like mosquitoes and their larvae as well as ensure a healthy environment.

Pella reiterated the government’s aim to ensure hygiene and a clean environment.

The Commissioner, at the closure of exercise, appreciated the level of compliance, at Shagari, Wuru-Hausa, upper luggere, Rumde, Doubele  specialist  hospital and others, where cholera patients were admitted.

One of the residents, Mr Shehu Aliyu, chairman Shagari Community Association, lauded the initiative, describing it as timely and beneficial to the people of the state.

“The reintroduction of the monthly sanitation is a good measure to tackle cholera, flood and malaria associated with this season. Aliyu added.

NAFDAC vows to checkmate substandard, falsified medicines in S-east region

The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has appealed to stakeholders in the medicine sales value-chain to actively join the agency to checkmate substandard and falsified medicines.

The Director of NAFDAC in South-East, Mr Martins Iluyomade, made the plea in Enugu during a one-day NAFDAC Community Sensitisation on Substandard and Falsified Medicines in Nigeria.

Iluyomade said that the war against substandard and falsified medicines involves all stakeholders in the medicine supply and sales value-chain to ensure a holistic fight and assured verifiable results in the near future.

According to him, the culture of keeping silence should stop as medicine sales do not have profit gains implication only but it has many lives saving implications.

“All of us have a duty to protect everyone around us against substandard and falsified medicines as we have to think of taking critical stand against those that engage in the unwholesome practice.

“As I speak, I am sure someone is somewhere still faking medicines and such injurious medicines find their way into the drug markets and health facilities.

“We should stand against substandard and falsified medicines and report to NAFDAC anyone selling or distributing chalks and other unwholesome substances

as medicines,” he said.

Earlier, Mr Collins Ogedegbe, State Coordinator of NAFDAC in Enugu State, said that the sensitisation involved all stakeholders as NAFDAC believe that “it is necessary to engage in continuous dialogue to ensure no link in the medicine supply and sales value-chain is left behind.”

“We want to work with everybody as a team and ensure there will be no hiding place for any unwholesome practice within the medicine supply and sales value-chain in Enugu State,” Ogedegbe said.

Speaking, Mr Oliver Ezemba, Chairman of National Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers (NAPPMED), Ogbete Main Market (Unit A) Enugu, lauded NAFDAC as well as Bill and Melida Gates Foundation for the sensitisation and enlightenment of NAPPMED members and other stakeholders.

Ezemba noted that it was gratifying that all members of NAPPMED had closed all shops to come and learn as well as ensure they follow due regulations and be more careful as they conduct their medicine sales businesses.

“NAPPMED has been partnering in an active manner with NAFDAC and other agencies or bodies involved in medicine value-chain supply and sales all these years.

“With today’s interface and sensitisation, we will fashion out ways to work closely and by doing that checkmate all forms of substandard and falsified medicines sales and outlets.

“I sincerely believe that when we collectively do this, we will be safe-guiding the lives of everybody around us,” he said.

Those that attended the sensitisation included: community pharmacists, representative of traditional rulers and community leaders as well as the media.

100 journalists benefit from MWAN, NUJ free medical outreach in Ebonyi

No fewer than 100 media practitioners in Ebonyi State benefited from the state council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) free medical outreach.

The free medical services were organized by the council in collaboration with the Medical Women Association of Nigeria in the state.

The outreach was part of the activities lined up by NUJ to mark this year’s press week with the theme “The Media Admits Economic Uncertainty”.

The free medical outreach centered on health talks, blood and sugar screening, hepatitis, oral care and treatment among others.

Over 30 journalists who have teeth-related problems were treated by a team of Dentists and counseled after the treatment.

Speaking during the medical outreach, the state Chairman of the union, Samson Nwafor said he included the outreach in the 2024 press week events because of the importance of health checks in the lives of the journalists because of the nature of journalism which makes the practitioners too busy to care for their health.

He opined that the free medical services will go a long way in keeping the journalists fit for their duties.

A former Chairman of the union, Comrade Tony Nwizi, described the medical outreach as timely in view of the pressure journalists encounter in their duties which affects their health.

The President of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria in the state, Dr. Lilian Nwobashi urged journalists to always go for medical checks to save them from health issues.

Bogoro LG boss, Sumi warns against forcing family planning on Women in Bauchi

The chairman of Bogoro local government area of Bauchi State, Surveyor Yakubu Lawi Sumi on Wednesday said that they have recorded a low birth rate as a result of family planning forced on women by some health personnel in the state.

Sumi made this known in an exclusive interview with The Nations News Nigeria correspondent in Bauchi, however warned both government and private health personnel to stop providing family planning for women without the approval of their husband.

He said that if it continues, it will definitely affect the local government and the future generations, describing the act as bad.

According to the council chairman, fixing family planning by some health personnel to women is causing the local government to record a low birth rate.

Sumi added, “You can see a woman of only ten years in marriage but she will stop giving birth just like that, which is not proper”.

Surveyor Lawi Sumi explained that  it is very wrong for any health personnel to give family planning without the agreement of the husband and the wife.

He assured that they will continue to create awareness to the communities and all the 13 Ward that formed the local government about the issue of family planning.

He urged health workers in the local government, traditional, religious leaders, women and youth groups to play a critical role by sensitizing the people about available health care services in their areas.

The chairman further warned that anybody found guilty of fixing family planning to any woman without the approval of her husband will definitely face the wrath of the law.

Bogoro LG boss,  Sumi applauds  Bauchi Govt, UNICEF, others for boasting health sector

The chairman of Bogoro local government area of Bauchi State, survey Yakubu Lawi Sumi on Tuesday applauded governor Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir, United Nations children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) for boasting of the health sector in the area.

Sumi made this known during a meeting with the local government taskforce on immunization for the month of September OBR3 2024 Campaign held at the council conference hall of the LGA. 

He urged the primary health care workers, traditional and religious leaders to play a critical role by sensitizing the people about available health care services in the local government.

According to the chairman, Sumi said it is a serious offence for private health facilities to carry out family planning service without government approval.

He said that his administration will do everything possible to address some of the challenges facing health facilities across the local government.

He also expressed concern about the low birth rate in the local government, adding that it will affect the future of LGA and the generations to come.

In his part, Mr. Godwin Hakuri who is the the Director Primary Health Care of the local government expressed his appreciation to the chairman for welcoming them assured to work with them for the development of the local government.

He said that there are health care services initiated by the World Bank in collaboration with the world Bank to assist communities to minimize financial stress.

According to him, 13 politicians per ward have received four million three hundred thousand naira to run their health facilities.

The Director Primary Health Care, Mr. Godwin Hakuri appealed to the local government Chairman for support toward improving immunization coverage across the 13 Ward that formed Bogoro.
